CARBONDALE, IL ? The Indiana State baseball team suffered their second straight defeat at Southern Illinois Saturday as the Salukis scored 10 unanswered runs to defeat the Sycamores 11-3.
Indiana State (4-12, 0-2 MVC) will try to avoid the sweep at the hands of Southern Illinois (10-7, 2-0 MVC) on Sunday as the two teams square off at 2 p.m. (ET).
The Sycamores took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first scoring two runs on three hits and a Saluki error. Ryan Strausborger opened with a single and advanced on a Brian Ramirez sacrifice bunt. Chris Schmidt then singled with Strausborger coming around to score on a throwing error by the SIU's Lou Johanns. After Brady Shoemaker grounded out, Brian Oliver came through a single to score Schmidt.
The Salukis got one back in the bottom half on a solo home run by Mark Kelly. Indiana State got that run back in the top of the third on a solo home run by Shoemaker.
But then the Sycamores offense was stopped while the Saluki offense got going. Southern Illinois scored five runs on five hits in the bottom of the third and added three more on two hits and a Sycamore error in the fifth to build a 9-3 lead. SIU added single runs in the seventh and eighth enroute to the win.
Brian Oliver (0-3) started for the Sycamores and went four innings, giving up eight runs, all earne,d on eight hits. Nathan Inman worked the next three innings, giving up three runs, all earned, on seven hits. David Gurbach worked the eighth and did not allow a run or a hit.
Shawn Joy (2-2) went six innings to get the win for SIU, allowing three runs on nine hits. Adam Curynski worked the final three innings to pick up his first save of the year, shutting out the Sycamores on three hits.
Oliver finished 3-for-5 at the plate with a double, two singles and an RBI. Shoemaker had a home run, single and an RBI in five trips to the plate while Schmidt had a double and a single, Strausborger two singles, and Bronco Lafrenz, Nick Ciolli and Pascual Del Real each had a single.
