Sycamore Baseball Team Splits With College Of Charleston Saturday

CHARLESTON, SC ? The Indiana State Sycamores faced the high scoring College of Charleston Cougars and came up with a high scoring game of their own, defeating the Cougars 26-20 in the nightcap of a twinbill Saturday. Indiana State dropped the opening game 9-4.

The Sycamores set a school record in the second game with seven batters hit by a pitch. The previous record was four set five different times.

Indiana State found themselves down 2-0 after two innings of the second game but exploded for six runs in the third to go out in front and the Sycamores never game up the lead.

Brian Jett got the Sycamores going with his first home run of the season, a solo shot over the left field fence to lead off the Indiana State third. Pascual Del Real singled through the right side, took second on an error by the Cougars and went to third as Brian Ramirez singled to right.

After Ramirez went to second on a wild pitch, Del Real scored on an RBI single by Chris Schmidt. Nick Ciolli singled to score Ramirez, Brady Shoemaker singled to score Schmidt, and Ryan Chavez singled to score Ciolli all with one out in the top of the third.

After the Cougars scored a run in the bottom of the third, the offensive explosion for Indiana State continued in the fourth with five runs coming across on five hits.

Ramirez opened the inning with a triple and scored on a wild pitch with Gary King and Schmidt hitting back to back singles. Both moved up a base when the Cougars Jordan Tiegs was called for a balk. A single by Ciolli and a double by Shoemaker brought home three more runs. The Indiana State lead grew to 11-2 when Shoemaker scored on sacrifice fly by Chavez.

The Sycamores took advantage of College of Charleston miscues in the fifth to score two more runs. Del Real led off with a single, Ramirez was hit by a pitch and King reached on an error to load the bases. Schmidt followed with a single to score Del Real while Ciolli flied out to right with Ramirez was able to score ISU's second run of the inning.

College of Charleston was able to cut into the deficit by scoring four runs in their half of the fourth and trailed 13-7 heading into the sixth. The Sycamores plated nine runs on just three hits in the top of the sixth but each of those hits went over the outfield walls.

Brumagin, Jett and Del Real were each hit by a pitch to open the Sycamore sixth. After Ramirez struck out, King, Schmidt and Schmidt each walked to force in three runs. The first big blow came on a 1-2 count as Shoemaker smacked a grand slam over the centerfield field. Chavez followed with a solo home run to center and Brumagin followed with a home run over the left centerfield fence and a 22-7 Sycamore lead.

The College of Charleston came back with three in the sixth and four in the seventh to trail 22-14 heading into the eighth. The Sycamores were able to plate four insurance runs on four hits for a 26-14 lead.

Chavez opened the ISU eighth with a walk and went to third on a Strausborger double. Jett doubled to score both runners and after Ramirez was hit by a pitch, King singled up the middle to score Jett. Ciolli hit a two-out double to score Ramirez to cap the ISU scoring.
