CHARLESTON, SC ? The Indiana State baseball team scored two runs in each of the first two innings and made them stand up to defeat The Citadel 4-3 Wednesday.
The victory broke a six-game losing streak for the Sycamores who improved to 2-8 on the season. Indiana State will begin a four-game series with the College of Charleston on Friday as the two teams square off at Patriots Point.
Chris Schmidt got the Sycamores going with two outs in the first as he extended his hitting streak to eight games with a two-out double to right. After Brady Shoemaker walked, Schmidt scored the first run of the game on an RBI single by Brian Oliver. Nick Ciolli followed with an RBI double to score Shoemaker and give ISU a 2-0 lead.
Indiana State plated two more in the top of the second inning. Pascual Del Real and Brian Ramirez opened with walks and after Ryan Strausborger reached safely on a bunt single, the bases were loaded.
After David Brumagin popped up to the catcher, Schmidt hit into a fielder's choice that allowed Del Real to score from third. Ramirez was also able to score on the play on a throwing error by the Cadets second baseman.
The Sycamores were able to make that lead stand up even though The Citadel scored twice in the fourth and added another run in the seventh.
Indiana State used six pitchers in the game with Matt Shelton starting on the mound for the Sycamores and worked the first 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on two hits. Nathan Inman (1-1) took over in the fourth and went 2.1 innings in earning the win, shutting out the Cadets on one hit.
Brian Oliver, Josh Varno, Micah Spencer and Chad Dawson each worked in relief with Dawson picking up his first save of the season.
