TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State gets ready to continue with its season after a successful home opener, heading to West Lafayette, Indiana, to face Purdue's Boilermakers this upcoming Wednesday at 5 PM ET.
Indiana State posted a 2-1 record in Price Field this past weekend, highlighted by a 10-2 win over Bradley during the first day of the series, which marked Indiana State's first Missouri Valley Conference play.
The Sycamores showcased unity on the defensive side and accurate hitting throughout the weekend. In their first win over the Braves, ISU exploded with three home runs by freshmen Mallory Chavez and Addie Burns, and junior Lauren Marsicek. The fifth inning was key, as the Sycamores recorded six runs in it. On day two of the series, both teams remained very close for the first half of the game with a score of 1-1, until freshman pinch runner Bella Pusateri scored on a Lauren Marsicek double to move the Sycamores to the lead; followed by Morgan Goodrich, Isabelle Saylor, and Lauren Marsicek, who also reached home during the inning.
Offensively, Indiana State's Morgan Goodrich and Mallory Chavez remained consistent, reaching base multiple times, earning 4 hits, stealing one base each, and achieving a batting average above .500 while not being struck out once.
In the circle, Lauren Sackett led the series. The redshirt senior right-hander enters the match with a 2.88 ERA and has showed to manage high-leverage innings while keeping opponents off balance. Indiana State also benefited from key relief appearances from Caylee Gaytan, who earned a save this past weekend.
Purdue enters the match strong with an 18-6 record, setting up what is expected to be a very high competition between MVC and Big10 schools. The Sycamores will look to continue building momentum as the season ramps up.
The first pitch for Wednesday's match is set for 5 p.m. ET at Bittinger Stadium.
