ST. LOUIS – Indiana State sophomore guard
Tierney Kelsey was named the Missouri Valley Conference Newcomer of the Week, the league announced Monday afternoon.
Kelsey tallied career highs in nearly every statistical category while helping Indiana State post a 2-1 record over the course of the week. She averaged 17.0 points, 3.3 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.3 steals per game while shooting 51.3 percent from the field across the Sycamores' three contests last week.
The Memphis, Tennessee, native posted the best game of her young career in the Trees' 90-69 home-opening win over Eastern Illinois, finishing with a career-high 22 points, five rebounds and three assists against the Panthers. Kelsey was 7-for-13 from the field and 8-for-10 from the free throw line, drawing 10 fouls against EIU without committing one.
Kelsey followed her career night with an 11-point, seven-assist showing Friday as Indiana State defeated Western Kentucky 65-60 for its first road win of the season. Her seven assists against the Lady Toppers were a career high while eight of her 11 points came in the last 15 minutes of the game as Indiana State overcame a nine-point third quarter deficit to win in Bowling Green for the first time since 1977.
The sophomore guard closed out her week with 18 points and two steals in Indiana State's 77-73 loss at Austin Peay, with her 18 points coming on an 8-for-12 clip from the field.
Monday's honor is the first weekly award for Kelsey in her career, and marks the first MVC weekly honor for a Sycamore in the
Marc Mitchell era. Indiana State's last MVC weekly honors came in the 2023-24 season, when Kiley Bess earned three Newcomer of the Week awards.
Kelsey and the Sycamores close a three-game road trip Wednesday morning at SIU Edwardsville, with tipoff set for 11 a.m.
