Late goal leads Marshall past Indiana State on Sunday

Huntington, W. VA.- Marshall scored late in the second half to hold off visiting Indiana State on Sunday afternoon as the Sycamores fell for the second time in the 2024 season at the Hoops Family Field with a score of 1-0. 

How it happened:
Marshall (2-3-1) doubled Indiana State's (4-2-1) shot attempts (20-10) and shots on goal (8-4) throughout the contest, where they each had five corner kicks. 

Indiana State and Marshall had an action packed first half, and despite neither team finding the back of the net both teams had multiple chances pressing forward. The Herd outshot the Sycamores 10-4 in the first 45 minutes of the contest as Alexander picked up a pair of saves with chances by Maria Chaves and Bailey Fisher. 

Alexa Mackey led the Sycamores in the first half, with two shots, one on goal, which was saved by Alexis Wolgemuth in the 38th minute of the contest. Wimberly Wright and Alex Lehnert also recorded shots for the Sycamores before the half. 

Marshall was the aggressor team in the first 45 minutes as the back line for the Sycamores were put up to the challenge, but kept The Herd from finding the back of the net to keep the game scoreless. 

Sunday's matchup remained scoreless until the 85th minute when Ebony Lucky picked up the game winning goal. Lucky collected the ball off a free kick by Bailey Fisher to drive the ball past Alexander and take the 1-0 lead as five minutes of play remained. 

Indiana State recorded four shots on goal against Marshall's Alexis Wolgemuth who picked up her second shutout this season. Shots on target in today's matchup came from Alexa Mackey, Alex Lehnert, Lina Fasquelle, and Wimberley Wright

Maddie Alexander wrapped up the contest on Sunday afternoon with six saves in 90 minutes in the goal for the Sycamores. Alexander now has 36 saves in the 2024 season, where she has allowed only four goals scored in 86 shots faced.

The Sycamores return home to Memorial Stadium next weekend with a matchup against Eastern Illinois, on Sunday, September 12 at 7 p.m ET.
