Mitchell announces addition of Ashley Yu to Indiana State women’s basketball staff

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head women's basketball coach Marc Mitchell announced the addition of Ashley Yu to the Sycamore staff as an assistant coach Wednesday.

"Ashley is a young superstar coach in the making," Mitchell said. "I have had the pleasure of working with her the past two seasons. Ashley is self-motivated, determined and extremely trustworthy! I am looking forward to her bringing her energy to Indiana State University."

Yu, a former WBCA 30 Under 30 honoree, joins the Sycamores after spending the last two seasons on Mitchell's staff at the University of Indianapolis. Four Greyhounds earned All-GLVC honors in that span, with Liv Becker, Patricia Chikamba, Sadie Hill and Elana Wells (twice) all earning conference honors.

"I am incredibly grateful to head coach Marc Mitchell for this amazing opportunity to serve on his staff as one of the assistant women's basketball coaches at Indiana State University," Yu said. "Having worked for Coach Mitchell at the University of Indianapolis, I have seen what he is capable of doing to create a winning culture as well as shaping the minds of young adults that are our future. I believe in his vision wholeheartedly, and have no doubt that he will continue to do the same and bring that success to Indiana State University. It is my intention to do everything in my power to help us achieve that vision here at ISU! AS ONE!"

UIndy went 31-27 in her two seasons on the sidelines, including an 18-12 mark in the 2022-23 campaign. The 18-win season marked an eight-win improvement from the 2021-22 campaign, while UIndy's 31 wins over the last two seasons marked a 10-win improvement from the two seasons prior. The 2022-23 season also saw UIndy finish fourth in the GLVC, the program's best finish in nearly a decade.

In Yu's two seasons at UIndy, the Greyhounds led the GLVC in free throws made and attempted in both the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, while also ranking among the conference leaders in scoring offense and rebounding in both seasons. UIndy also ranked second in the conference in bench points in the 2023-24 season, getting nearly 27 points per game from outside its starting five. The Greyhounds averaged better than 70 points per game in each of the last two seasons, finishing both years with a positive scoring margin.

Prior to UIndy, Yu was a key member of the Dominican University athletic department, serving as the Coordinator of Intramurals, Club Sports & Camps as well as serving in the role as Assistant Women's Basketball Coach for two seasons. She helped guide the program to two consecutive Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference (NACC) tournament appearances. Yu also coached three first team all-conference selections, a second team all-conference selection and the first Freshman of the Year in program history.

Following the 2021-22 campaign, Yu earned a spot on the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) prestigious 30 Under 30 list. This list recognizes 30 of the top up-and-coming women's basketball coaches ages 30 and under at all levels of the sport.

Yu began her coaching career as the Assistant Women's Basketball Coach and Coordinator of Athletic Facilities at City College of New York (CCNY). During her tenure at CCNY, Yu played an important role in the program's player development and scouting while also serving as the coordinator for the Beavers' community service events and recruiting efforts.

Yu was a four-year letter winner and three-time team captain for the Hunter College Hawks women's basketball team, graduating in 2019. After winning just 11 games in her first season, the team improved up to 18 wins by her senior year and earned its first-ever NCAA Division III regional ranking at No. 8 in the Atlantic Region.
