Sycamores take extra-inning win over Michigan State to move to 5-0

Box Score PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. Joe Kido scored the game-winning run on a bases-loaded passed ball in the bottom of the 10th inning as Indiana State topped Michigan State, 7-6, on the Sycamores' first day at the Snowbird Baseball Classic.

Tied 6-6 after Randal Diaz scored on a wild pitch in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Sycamores (5-0) opened the 10th inning with Kido pinch-hitting and drawing a leadoff walk. He advanced to second on a passed ball and took third on a wild pitch to give ISU a runner 90 feet from the plate with none out. Intentional walks were issued to both Mike Sears and Josue Urdaneta to set up the force out at the plate, but Michigan State (1-4) reliever Logan Pikur's pitch to the plate was mishandled and rolled to the backstop allowing Kido to score and set off an Indiana State celebration.

Jared Spencer (1-0) took the win on the mound for Indiana State as the relief ace entered the game in the top of the ninth and retired six of the seven batters he faced to keep Michigan State off the scoreboard. The Centreville, Mich. native surrendered just a single and struck out three in the win.

Luis Hernandez homered for the first time in the 2024 season and added two RBIs for the Sycamore offense, while Randal Diaz added a three-hit game as Indiana State connected on nine hits in the game. Mike Sears added an RBI double for ISU in the win.

Cam Edmonson went the first two innings in the Friday start. The Sycamore left-hander allowed two hits and three runs while striking out two, before turning the ball over to Simon Gregersen and Brayden Lybarger in relief. Gregersen went 3.2 innings posting a season-high six strikeouts, while Lybarger went 2.1 innings in his 2024 debut before handing the ball to Spencer in the ninth.

Sam Busch posted three hits, including a go-ahead solo home run in the top of the eighth inning to pace the Michigan State offense. Christian Williams added a two-run home run in the loss.

Ryan Szczepaniak (0-1) took the loss going 1.1 innings in relief, walking three while striking out one. Joseph Dzierwa went the first 5.0 innings in the no-decision, while Nolan Higgins and Logan Pikur both made appearances.
