Sycamore Soccer set to face Belmont in Quarterfinals

TERRE HAUTE, Ind.- Indiana State women's soccer is set to take on host No. 4 seed Belmont in an MVC Quarterfinal match on Sunday, November 3, at E.S. Rose Field, with kickoff scheduled for 3 p.m. ET. This matchup will be streamed on ESPN+.

Indiana State secured a victory over Southern Illinois 2-1 in the opening round of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament at E.S. Rose Park on Thursday evening. 

Mackenzie Kent scored both goals for the Sycamores, with her first coming just 58 seconds into the match from a free kick taken by Woods.

Southern Illinois equalized with a goal from Maycie Massingill in the 15th minute, but Mackenzie Kent put Indiana State back in front in the 25th minute with a successful chip shot over the SIU goalkeeper, assisted by Wright.

Despite being outshot 17-7 and facing pressure in the second half, Indiana State's defense, led by goalkeeper Maddie Alexander's nine saves, held firm to secure their first conference tournament win since 2016 and advance to the quarterfinals. 

Thursday's match marked Indiana State's first appearance in the MVC Tournament since 2021.

Previous Matchup against the Bruins
Indiana State concluded the regular season last week with a 2-1 victory over Belmont, extending their unbeaten home record to 5-0-4 at Memorial Stadium. 

Belmont took an early lead in the 15th minute with Ava Labocki's goal. 

The Sycamores equalized in the 29th minute when Maddie Helling found the back of the net with a header off a corner kick.

In the second half, senior keeper Alexa Seiler made a crucial save, and Indiana State maintained pressure, ultimately taking a 2-1 lead with Audrey Roberts' goal in the 82nd minute.

Both Helling and Alex Lehnert contributed four shots each, with Helling and Roberts scoring the crucial goals for the Sycamores.

Sycamore Standouts 
Indiana State has recorded 34 goals in the 2024 season, with Mackenzie Kent leading the Sycamores by scoring eight of those goals and totaling 17 points. Kent has taken 41 shots so far this year.

Wimberley Wright remains a key playmaker for Indiana State, recording her sixth assist in the opening round victory over Southern Illinois. She has accumulated a total of 1,433 minutes on the field this season.

Maddie Alexander has served as the primary goalkeeper for the Sycamores this season, starting every one of the 20 matches. The Battle Creek, Mich. native has recorded 116 saves, achieved nine shutouts, and holds a save percentage of .872, having allowed only 17 goals this season.

Scouting Belmont: 
The Belmont Bruins, under head coach Kelsey Cameron in her second season, enter Sunday's matchup with an overall record of 8-9-2 and a 5-4-1 conference record, earning the fourth seed in the MVC Women's Soccer Championship. 

The Bruins have netted 23 goals this season from a total of 161 shots. Reagan Ross and Ava Labocki are the team's top scorers, having combined for 11 goals. Ross has recorded 10 points, while Labocki has contributed 13 points.

Sydney Jones has served as the primary goalkeeper for Belmont in the 2024 season, making 79 saves, achieving six shutouts, and posting a save percentage of .806 while allowing 19 goals.
