CHAMPAIGN, Ill. –
Chloe Farro claimed the 100-yard Freestyle Super Final win and the Indiana State 400-yard Freestyle Relay Team closed out the night winning the final event of the day to end the first day of the House of Paign Invite held at the ARC Pool.
The Sycamores lead Vanderbilt, 89-37, through the first day of competition. Indiana State trails Illinois 90-39 through the first 12 events of the weekend.
Chloe Farro picked up Indiana State's first win of the day in the Super Final round. Due to the unique scoring nature of the meet, the regular rounds are scored as normal. The Super Final round consists of the top swimmers by each institution with the winner recording an extra five points to their team's totals. Farro out-touched Illinois' Laurel Bludgen 51.11-51.88 to take the individual title for the Sycamores.
Indiana State's top relay team closed out the meet winning the 400-yard Freestyle Relay.
Kaleigh Kelley started the race going 52.22 to give the Sycamores the early lead through 100 yards.
Sahara Visscher went 51.73 in her leg, while
Alexa Szadorski touched the wall in 52.21 to turn it over to Farro for the finishing kick. The Sycamore senior turned in the fastest 100-yard split of the relay going 50.84 to give the Sycamores the win in 3:27.00 topping Illinois' best team that finished in 3:27.48.
"I'm really pleased with a lot of what we saw today," head coach
Josh Christensen said. "We competed tough and had some really quality swims in a competitive environment. Looking forward to more of the same tomorrow!"
Indiana State opened the meet finishing third overall in the 200-yard Medley Relay as the team of Visscher,
Ali Pearson, Kelley, and Farro touched the wall in 1:44.30. The second Sycamore team in the event placed sixth in 1:48.69 with
Alexandria Cotter,
Dorotea Bukvic,
Sophia Diaz, and
Kalli Agapios rounded out the field.
Ella Moustgaard was Indiana State's top finisher in the 100-yard Backstroke event as the sophomore touched the wall in 58.56 to place seventh overall.
Kate Reeves was ninth in 59.24, while
Olivia Diruzza (59.94) and Agapios (1:00.21) also posted top-12 finishes.
Visscher took on the field in the 100-yard Backstroke Super Final finishing second overall in 56.68.
Szadorski (1:05.43) and Cotter (1:06.46) finished third and fourth respectively in the 100-yard Breaststroke event to lead the Sycamores in the field. Bukvic was 10th overall in 1:08.19, while
Peyton Heagy rounded out the group in 1:08.41 to place 11th.
Pearson was Indiana State's representative in the 100-yard Breaststroke Super Final finishing third overall in 1:04.11.
Indiana State's depth in the long races was showcased in the 1000-yard Freestyle as
Claire Parsons (10:17.55) and
Gemma Dilks (10:21.13) finished second and third overall in the field.
Maria Saldana Riebeling's time of 10:26.49 was the sixth-fastest overall in the pool.
Raine Boles led the way for the Sycamores in the 100-yard Fly as the junior finished second overall in the field in 56.53. Diaz was fourth overall in 57.32, while Cotter placed fifth in 57.74.
Haley Halsall rounded out the group in action in 59.88 to take 12th overall.
Kelley represented Indiana State in the 100-yard Fly Super Final placing second overall in 56.09.
Erin Cummins (52.78) and Szadorski (52.82) finished third and fourth overall for the Sycamores in the 100-yard Freestyle, while Heagy added a seventh-place result in 53.75. Allie Barasch rounded out the Indiana State swimmers in 54.24 to take ninth in the field.
Brenna Woodruff was Indiana State's top finisher in the 1M Diving event as the junior recorded a 10-dive score of 308.73 to place third overall in the field.
Daniela Orta Castaneda finished fifth with 307.90 ahead of teammate
Lucia McDougall (306.71).
Angelina Damiano was eighth with 302.26, while
Ella Taylor rounded out the group with 187.95.
The Indiana State 400-yard Freestyle Relay second team finished fourth overall in the field as Cummins,
Claire Parsons, Riebling, and Agapios closed out the event with a time of 3:32.56.
