TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State closes out the 2024 regular season on Sunday afternoon as the Sycamores host Belmont at Memorial Stadium. Kickoff between the Sycamores and the Bruins is set for 1 p.m. and will be carried live on ESPN+.
The Sycamores (8-5-5, 3-3-3) have earned 12 points this season, placing them fifth in the Missouri Valley rankings. The Bruins (8-8-2, 5-3-1) rank fourth in the MVC with 16 points.
Sunday's matchup will mark the 10th meeting between these two teams. Indiana State leads the all-time series with a record of 4-1-4, including a scoreless draw in their most recent encounter in 2023 in Nashville.
Sycamore Standouts:
Alex Lehnert scored two late goals in ISU's most recent matchup in the second half as Indiana State celebrated Senior Day at Memorial Stadium with a 2-2 draw against Evansville on Sunday afternoon.
Indiana State maintained its unbeaten streak against Evansville at Memorial Stadium, as the Sycamores offense came alive in the second half.
The Purple Aces took an early lead in the 14th minute when Taylor Johnson slipped the ball past goalkeeper Maddie Alexander and the Sycamore defense into the bottom right corner of the net.
Evansville doubled its lead in the first half with a goal from Rachel Rosborough in the 29th minute.
In the first half, Mackenzie Kent led the Sycamores, recording the team's first two shots on target, both saved by UE goalkeeper Myia Danek.
Fasquelle, Quinn, and Helling created shot opportunities in the second half, while Alexa Mackey and Autumn Fairfax had chances in the 59th and 75th minutes, as Danek finished with six saves in the match.
Maddie Alexander made her first save in the 53rd minute, stopping a shot from Ella Hamner and preventing Evansville from scoring a third goal. Alexander ended the game with three saves in the 2-2 draw.
Lehnert cut the Purple Aces' lead to 2-1 in the 75th minute, scoring her fifth goal of the season from 25 yards out, firing a shot past Danek into the upper left corner.
With just under four minutes left in the match, Lehnert equalized in the 86th minute, sending her sixth goal of the season sailing over Danek's head into the upper right corner, securing the draw and preserving Indiana State's unbeaten streak at home.
Alex Lehnert was named Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week announced by the conference office on Tuesday morning. This is the second time in the 2024 season that Lehnert has received this award.
Lehnert leads the Sycamores with 15 points, placing her tied for third in the conference. She is also tied for second in goals scored this season, with a total of 6.
Maddie Alexander has made 104 saves this season, bringing her career total to 350. She currently leads the MVC in shutouts (9), saves (104), save percentage (.874), and goals-against average (0.86).
Mackenzie Kent leads the ISU offense this season with 36 shot attempts, 22 of which were on target, giving her a shot-on-goal percentage of .611. She has scored six goals and tallied a total of 13 points.
Three Sycamore seniors—Wright, Stephens, and Alexander—have started all 18 matches this season.
Scouting Belmont:
The Bruins enter the matchup with an overall record of 8-8-2 as they went 2-0 last week defeating Valppo 4-0 and Southern Illinois 3-0.
Kelsey Cameron began her second season as head coach of the Belmont women's soccer team in 2024.
Reagan Ross and Ava Labocki are the Bruins' leading scorers this season, each with five goals. Ross has totaled 10 points, while Labocki has accumulated 11 points.
