Last Time Out
Mya Glanton pulled down a career-high 18 rebounds and added 11 points Thursday night, but a slow start proved costly for Indiana State in a 75-63 loss to Murray State inside Hulman Center.
Glanton's double-double was her team-leading fourth of the season.
Bella Finnegan added 13 points while
Asia Donald scored 12 off the bench.
Indiana State found itself down 26-9 after the opening quarter, but slowly worked its way back into the game. The Sycamores outscored Murray State 14-9 in the second quarter thanks in large part to five points from Finnegan and four from Donald, then cut their deficit down to 10 after three quarters following a buzzer-beating shot from
Deja Jones. Three-point plays from Glanton and Donald got the Trees within single-digits and free throws from
Kiley Bess and
Savannah White pulled Indiana State within five, but an 8-0 Murray State run put the game out of reach.
Rebound Machine
Mya Glanton's 18 rebounds in Thursday's game against Murray State represented a career-high and the fourth-highest single-game rebounding mark in Indiana State history. 10 of Glanton's 18 rebounds came on the offensive glass, the most for any MVC athlete in a game this season.
Entering Sunday's game, Glanton sits one rebound shy of 500 for her career. She leads Indiana State this season with 8.2 rebounds per game.
Fight To The Finish
Indiana State trailed 26-9 after the opening quarter against Murray State, but the Sycamores never wavered and worked their way back. ISU outscored the Racers 32-25 across the second and third quarters, and managed to cut it to a five-point game midway through the fourth.
The Sycamores' defense played a major role in helping Indiana State get back in the game. Murray State entered Thursday's game averaging 93.9 points per game, but the Sycamores held the Racers to 49 points across the last three quarters.
Balancing Act
Indiana State's scoring has been a balanced effort this season, with four different Sycamores averaging double-digit points per game.
Chelsea Cain leads the Trees with 11.5 points per game, while
Kiley Bess (11.1),
Bella Finnegan (10.1) and
Mya Glanton (10.0) also average at least 10 points per game. Additionally,
Asia Donald,
Ella Sawyer,
Keslyn Secrist and
Chloe Williams have all produced double-digit scoring games this season for the Sycamores.
The balanced offense for the Sycamores has made it difficult for teams to key in on any specific player. No player has led Indiana State in scoring in consecutive games this season.
Stepping Up
Indiana State guard
Savannah White has seen her opportunities increase since the start of conference play, and the Wisconsin transfer has made the most of her extra chances on the floor.
White ranks sixth in the MVC in rebounding during conference play with 7.3 boards per game, including 2.3 offensive rebounds per game. Along with
Mya Glanton, she is part of the only duo in the MVC ranking in the top six in the conference in rebounding.
Hitting From Distance
Indiana State guard
Bella Finnegan has found her stroke from behind the arc in recent games, knocking down three 3-pointers in consecutive games against Northern Iowa and Murray State.
Finnegan's 3-point percentage has improved to 38.1 percent (8-for-21) since the start of conference play, and the sophomore sharpshooter has shot 43 percent (6-for-14) from distance over the last two games.
Belmont at a Glance
Belmont enters the weekend with an 11-4 overall record and a perfect 4-0 mark in conference play. The Bruins have won nine of their last 10 games and defeated Evansville 84-40 in their last game.
Tessa Miller leads the Bruins in scoring at 13.9 points per game, with Jailyn Banks (13.0), Tuti Jones (10.6) and Kendal Cheesman (10.3) all averaging double-digit scoring. Cheesman, Kilyn McGuff and Miller all average at least six rebounds per game, while Jones has dished out more than four assists per game.
Bart Brooks is in his seventh season at the helm of the Belmont program and owns a 157-50 overall record. Brooks has won a regular season or conference tournament title in each of his first six seasons leading the Bruins.
Series History Against Belmont
Belmont has a 5-2 lead in the all-time series and has won each of the last two games in the series. The Bruins won two of the three previous meetings in Terre Haute.
Last Meeting Against Belmont (Feb. 12, 2023)
Del'Janae Williams became the 29th player in program history to reach 1,000 career points, but Indiana State was unable to keep pace with Belmont in an 81-69 setback inside Curb Event Center.
Williams scored Indiana State's first nine points to reach the milestone, with a layup early in the first quarter being the basket to put her over the mark.
Chelsea Cain led the Sycamore with 18 points and seven rebounds, while Williams had 14 points and
Bella Finnegan had 13.
Both team shot better than 50 percent from the field in the game, but turnovers loomed large for Indiana State. The Sycamores had 21 turnovers, which Belmont turned into 22 points on the other end. After trailing by double-digits in the second quarter, Indiana State got within one on multiple occasions in the third quarter but couldn't find a go-ahead bucket, as the homestanding Bruins won their eighth straight game.
