TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State outfielder
Seth Gergely signed a professional contract with the Utica Unicorns of the United Shore Professional Baseball League as announced on Tuesday afternoon.
Gergely signs the deal to close out the 2023 campaign with the Unicorns following a standout senior season with the Sycamores. The Tallmadge, Ohio native wrapped up his career as a two-time MVC All-Defensive Team selection also earning Second Team All-Conference honors in 2022.
Gergely was one of the nation's best defensive outfielders over his career with the Sycamores posting just two errors and a .993 fielding percentage over 299 career chances in the field. He added three assists and posted a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage over the 2023 season.
His offensive game took major strides over his final season in the Blue & White. He was a two-time MVC Player of the Week selection earning the honors following weekend series against SEMO and Memphis, as well as Vanderbilt and Southern Illinois.
Gergely posted a .288 batting average with 57 hits over 198 at-bats in his final season connecting on nine doubles and five home runs. He added 35 runs scored and 29 RBIs, while finishing among the team leaders in walks (29), hit by pitch (14), on-base percentage (.410) and slugging percentage (.409). He started the season strong reaching base in 43 of his first 45 games with a pair of 15 game on-base streaks. He added a two-homer game with six RBIs in a mid-March contest against Valparaiso.
Over his career, Gergely was a lifetime .291 hitter lining up in 141 games with 121 starts. He posted 129 career hits including 28 doubles, four triples, and five home runs, while adding 18 stolen bases.
Gergely is the fourth Sycamore from the 2023 team to sign professionally joining
Matt Jachec (MLB Cleveland Guardians),
Connor Fenlong (MLB Kansas City Royals), and
Lane Miller (MLB Draft League Trenton Thunder).
