TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales announced the addition of Travis Smith as the Director of Student Athlete Academic Services on Monday afternoon.
Smith has an extensive background working in student athlete academics with prior stints at Indiana University, the University of Indianapolis, and ISU to his credit before returning to join the Sycamores in the summer of 2023.
"I look forward to working with Travis," Angie Lansing, Senior Associate A.D./SWA said. "I am confident in his knowledge of our industry and his combined experience with academics and NCAA compliance. Our student-athletes will be well served."
Smith returns to Indiana State after serving as the Deputy Executive Assistant to the President at Indiana University this past year. Smith assisted in managing the president's calendar and coordinating travel for a multi-campus office, while also managing projects for the president, chief of staff, and senior staff. He also served as professional support on the IU Indianapolis Athletics Task Force.
"I would like to thank Vice Provost for Academics, Susan Powers, and Director of Athletics, Sherard Clinkscales, for this opportunity to return to Indiana State University and work closely with our student-athletes, coaches, and administration, many of whom I worked with in my first stint at ISU," Smith said. "The NCAA Transformation Committee has made it clear that Division One schools are expected to apply a holistic approach to serving student-athletes and I look forward to building on what has been put in place here at ISU."
Prior to that role, Smith served as the Associate Director of Academics and Compliance at Indiana University from 2019-22. During his time with the Hoosiers, he oversaw critical compliance areas for the men's and women's basketball and football teams, as well as coordinated a successful NCAA Academic Performance Program data review. He worked closely with the coaching staffs from each team and served as a primary academic advisor to a cohort of freshmen student-athletes.
Smith served as the Assistant Athletic Director of Academics for the University of Indianapolis from 2016-19 where he provided academic advising for all student-athletes through individual appointments and team-and-major-specific group advising sessions. He served on UI's senior staff to help with internal departmental and institution strategic decisions and worked directly with each academic school and institutional offices including registrar and financial aid. He also assisted with compliance, internal operations, and tournament/event administration responsibilities.
Smith's first stint at Indiana State came in 2014-16 where he served as an Athletic Studies Coordinator. He served as a secondary academic advisor to student-athletes. He coordinated the NCAA Academic Performance Program, while also supervising two graduate assistants and 20+ student employees. Smith also taught multiple sections of the University 101 course to freshmen student-athletes.
