Sycamores sign NJCAA All-American Olivia Medford ahead of 2023-24 season

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State head women's basketball coach Chad Killinger announced the addition of guard Olivia Medford to the program Tuesday.

"Olivia is a multi-skilled, versatile guard with size and started to realize her potential over the past two years in junior college. She is a bit of a late bloomer and, like a lot of young women, her initial recruitment out of high school was hampered by the COVID-19 pandemic," Killinger said. "She can handle the ball on the fast break, finish at the rim with some creativity and knock down open jumpers. She is a good rebounder from the guard position and should help us be able to change some things up on the defensive end of the floor. She's committed to being the best player she can become - a true gym rat and will bring the type of work ethic that will help us continue to move our program in an upward trajectory. We couldn't be more excited to add her to our roster."

Medford, a 5-11 guard from Rockville Centre, New York, comes to Terre Haute after spending the past two seasons at Monroe College in New Rochelle, New York, where she was a 2022 NJCAA Honorable Mention All-American and the 2022 NJCAA Region 15 Player of the Year. She led the Mustangs in scoring in both of her seasons on campus, averaging 12.7 points, 5.4 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.9 assists per game while helping Monroe make back-to-back NJCAA Division I National Tournament appearances in 2022 and 2023. Her 709 points scored in two seasons put her in the top 10 in Monroe history in scoring.

The 2022-23 season saw Medford average a team-leading 12.6 points per game for a Monroe team that earned a spot in the NJCAA Division I National Tournament. She had 21 double-figure scoring games, including five games with 20-plus points and a season-high 26 against Raritan Valley CC. Medford also had a 23-point, 10-rebound double-double against Harford CC. In addition, she also added 4.3 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.8 steals per game, as Monroe won 16 games and reached the first round of the national tournament.

Medford shined in her first season at Monroe, earning Honorable Mention NJCAA All-America honors while also being named the NJCAA Region 15 Player of the Year. She averaged 12.8 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 1.7 assists per game, leading the team in points and steals while ranking second in rebounds and fourth in assists. In addition, her 3.2 steals per game ranked 19th in the NJCAA. Medford had four double-doubles and finished the season with 14 double-figure scoring games, including five games with 20-plus points. Included in her accolades are a 13-point, 11-steal game against Erie CC and 26-point outings against both ASA Brooklyn and Monroe CC.

Medford, who played her high school career at Long Island Lutheran HS, becomes the first college transfer to sign with the Sycamores this season, joining four incoming freshmen who signed with Indiana State in November as part of this season's signing class.
