ST. LOUIS –Indiana State outside hitter
Kira Holland was named the MVC Freshman of the Week for the second straight week Monday afternoon after posting double-digit kills in each of the Sycamores' matches over the weekend.
Holland recorded double-digit kills against both of the top two teams in the conference over the weekend, including her fourth double-double of the season against Drake. She opened the weekend with 10 kills and 14 digs against the Bulldogs, with the 14 digs being her most in a conference game this season.
Holland followed that performance with 10 kills and seven digs against Northern Iowa. She also added a pair of service aces against Drake and a block solo against Northern Iowa. Holland averaged 3.33 kills and 3.50 digs per set across the two matches.
Holland leads all MVC freshmen with 3.17 kills per set this season, while her 2.63 digs per set this season ranks third among freshmen in the conference. She ranks in the top 20 overall in the conference in both kills (12th) and digs (20th). Holland's numbers in conference play are even better, as she has averaged 3.48 kills and 3.10 digs per set across Indiana State's first four MVC matches.
The weekly honor is the second of Holland's career and the third MVC Freshman of the Week honor for a Sycamore this season after
Macy Lengacher previously earned the honor during the opening weekend of play. Holland is just the second player in the conference to earn a weekly honor in consecutive weeks this season, while Indiana State's three MVC Freshman of the Week honors are the most among MVC schools this season. This season marks the first time since 2013 that Indiana State has had three MVC weekly honorees in a season.
Holland and the Sycamores are in action Monday night at Evansville, with first serve set for 7 p.m. Indiana State returns home for matches at ISU Arena Friday and Saturday against Valparaiso and UIC.
