Sycamores’ comeback attempt falls short at Murray State

MURRAY, Ky. – Karinna Gall and Mallory Keller had 13 kills apiece Friday night, while Storm Suhre had 12 kills, but Murray State edged past visiting Indiana State in four sets (25-17, 25-22, 19-25, 27-25) inside Racer Arena.

Gall also had 10 digs for her third double-double of the season, while Emma Kaelin had a season-high 28 assists in the setback. Melina Tedrow had a match-high 23 digs and was one of three Sycamores with double-digit digs, along with Gall (10) and Taylor Shelton (14).

Smilar to many recent matches for the Sycamores, Indiana State scored the first point on a kill by Keller. Murray State followed that opening points with a 6-0 run, though, and never looked back in the first set. Indiana State clawed its way back to make it a four-point deficit at 11-7 following kills by Keller and Jazzlyn Ford, but a 5-0 run for the Racers followed. The Trees went on a late seven-point scoring run on Tedrow's serve, which included two kills apiece by Gall and Suhre, but Murray State used another scoring run to clinch the opening set, 25-17.

Murray State jumped out to an early 4-0 lead in the second set, but the Sycamores remained within striking distance throughout. Indiana State cut its deficit down to two midway through the set, 17-15, following kills by Ford and Jamie Brown along with a block assist by Brown and Kaitlyn Hamilton, but the Racers responded with three straight points. The Trees fought off four straight set points, three of which came on Hamilton's serve including a service ace, but Murray State left the Sycamores with work to do after taking the second set 25-22.

The Racers and Sycamores traded early scoring runs in the third set, with neither team leading by more than two until a kill by Ford put Indiana State ahead 10-7. ISU maintained its multi-point lead for most of the set until a late 4-0 Murray State run tied it at 19-all. From there, kills Keller and Gall kickstarted a 6-0 run to close the set for the Sycamores, as Indiana State extended the match with a 25-19 win in the third.

Similar to the third set, Indiana State and Murray State traded scoring runs throughout the first half of the fourth set with neither team able to gain a significant advantage. Indiana State went into the media timeout ahead 15-14 following a kill by Ford and extended its lead to 19-17 following a kill by Keller and an ace by Suhre. Murray State responded, though, and had the Sycamores on the ropes at match point before kills by Hamilton and Gall on back-to-back points tied the set at 24-all. A kill by Gall thwarted another set point but Murray State found a way to close out the set, 27-25, taking the match.

Inside the Numbers
  • Melina Tedrow's 23 digs were a season high and marked the second time this season she recorded 20 or more digs in a match.
  • Despite falling in the match, Indiana State had a better hitting percentage (.263) than Murray State (.258).
  • Jazzlyn Ford's five kills were her most in a match this season. Nearly half of her 19 kills this season have come in the Sycamores' three MVC matches.

News and Notes
  • Friday's match was just the third-ever matchup between Indiana State and Murray State and the first in Murray. The Sycamores are 0-3 all-time against the Racers.
  • Karinna Gall sits 22 kills away from reaching 500 for her career following Friday's 13-kill performance. Gall would become the third different Sycamore to reach the mark this season, joining Mallory Keller and Kaitlyn Hamilton.
