NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Karinna Gall registered a double-double for the second consecutive match, but it wasn't enough for Indiana State Saturday evening in a three-set loss to Belmont (25-20, 25-20, 25-21) inside Curb Event Center.
Gall finished with a team-leading 14 kills and 12 digs, while
Storm Suhre had seven kills on 11 attempts.
Taylor Shelton and
Kaitlyn Hamilton had six kills apiece, while
Jazzlyn Ford had a career-best 26 assists.
Cadence Gilley finished with 10 digs.
Belmont jumped out to a 5-0 lead and never looked back in the opening set as Indiana State was never able to get in a rhythm on the attacking end. The Sycamores used a late rally to cut the deficit to 21-16, including kills by Hamilton and
Jamie Brown, but the Bruins managed to hold on and take the set 25-20.
The Sycamores and Bruins exchanged scoring runs throughout the early stages of the second set, with neither team holding an advantage of more than two points until a 4-1 scoring run put Belmont ahead 15-11 at the media timeout. Indiana State used a 5-0 scoring run late in the set to cut it to 22-20, with Ford accounting for a kill and an ace during the run. Belmont countered by scoring each of the last three points, though, to clinch the second set 25-20.
Similar to the first set, Belmont jumped out to an early lead, but this time the Sycamores came roaring right back. Gall had a pair of kills in a three-point span to cut the deficit to 9-6, and later added a service ace to make it a one-point difference at 13-12. Indiana State took its first lead of the set at 18-17 following a block assist by Gall and Suhre, but a four-point Belmont run put the home side ahead for good. Shelton added a late kill, but the Bruins won the third set 25-21 to clinch the match.
