TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Karinna Gall registered career highs of 23 kills and 21 digs Friday night, helping lead Indiana State to a come-from-behind five-set win over visiting Missouri State (22-25, 25-23, 14-25, 25-21, 16-14) inside ISU Arena.
Gall was one of two Sycamores to record a double-double Friday, as
Taylor Shelton had 10 kills and a season-high 16 digs for the Trees.
Kaitlyn Hamilton and
Storm Suhre had 14 kills apiece, with
Jazzlyn Ford orchestrating the attack with a career-high 49 assists.
Melina Tedrow had 24 digs and was one of four Trees to reach double-figures in the stat, along with Gall (21), Shelton (16) and
Cadence Gilley (11).
Indiana State jumped out to an early first-set lead behind a pair of kills by Hamilton and a service ace by Tedrow. Missouri State responded though, and tied the set midway through before a kill by Suhre sent the teams to the media timeout with ISU narrowly ahead 15-14. Missouri State used a four-point run to pull away late in the set and held on to win the opener 25-22 despite a flurry of late kills by Shelton and Suhre.
Similar to the first set, Indiana State jumped out to an early lead, taking advantage of kills by both Gall and
Jamie Brown along with multiple MSU attack errors. Suhre and Shelton added kills to push the Sycamore lead to 10-4 before the Bears came roaring back. Missouri State cut the lead to a point at 18-17 and managed to tie it at 22-all, but the Trees had an answer. Kills by Hamilton and Shelton closed the set and sent the teams to the intermission deadlocked, as Indiana State won the second frame 25-23.
Indiana State and Missouri State traded early points in the third set before a 6-0 run gave the visitors an 11-6 advantage. The Sycamores cut their deficit in half following kills by Shelton and Suhre, along with a service ace by Gilley, but that was the closest Indiana State got for the remainder of the set. Missouri State hit .357 in the third and cruised to a 25-14 win in the set, putting Indiana State's back against the wall.
Missouri State jumped out to an early lead in the fourth set but the Sycamores rallied back. Back-to-back service aces by Tedrow, followed by kills by both Hamilton and Suhre, put the Trees ahead 11-8 in what became a back-and-forth set. Tied at 17, Tedrow served up another ace and Gall followed with a kill that put the Trees ahead for good. Missouri State got with in two, but kills by Suhre and Gall sent the teams to a deciding fifth set, as Indiana State took the fourth 25-21.
Indiana State found itself in an uphill battle early in the fifth, as Missouri State jumped out to a 7-3 lead. The Sycamores had a never-say-die attitude though, and got right back in the match. Hamilton notched a pair of kills, and Gilley followed with an ace as part of a 5-1 run to even the set at 9-all. Gall and Brown combined for a block late, the former added a kill to put the Trees on the brink of victory at 14-12. Missouri State fought off two set points, but a Gall kill and an MSU attack error sent the Sycamore faithful home happy, as Indiana State took the deciding set 16-14.
