TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's basketball opens fall camp Monday morning, as the Sycamores continue preparations for the upcoming 2022-23 season.
Indiana State's practices will be closed to the general public. Head coach
Chad Killinger and student-athletes will be available to the media upon request.
The Sycamores will look to build off last season's campaign, Killinger's first with the program, which saw Indiana State win 11 games overall and five in conference play. The win totals, both overall and conference, were more than the 2019-20 and 2020-21 seasons combined. Indiana State also won its first MVC Tournament game since 2014 with an 89-75 opening-round victory over Evansville.
Indiana State returns a plethora of talent from last season's team, headlined by guard
Del'Janae Williams, who led the Sycamores in points (12.5), assists (2.8) and steals (2.0). Williams earned Honorable Mention All-MVC honors and also landed on the MVC All-Defensive Team, becoming the first Sycamore to earn either honor since the 2017-18 season. A trio of guards from last season's rotation, in addition to Williams, are also back in sharpshooters
Natalia Lalic (7.9 ppg, 2.1 rpg, 1.8 apg, .331 3-point percentage) and
Anna McKendree (5.9 ppg, 1.5 spg, .386 3-point percentage) and point guard
Caitlin Anderson (5.8 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, 1.4 spg).
In the frontcourt,
Mya Glanton will look to build off her breakout season that saw her average 7.9 points and a team-leading 6.1 rebounds per game. Glanton had three 20-point, 10-rebound games last season, setting career highs of 26 points in the first round of the MVC Tournament against Evansville and 16 rebounds in a home game against Western Michigan.
Florence Tshimanga (1.0 ppg, 1.0 rpg, career-high seven points at Nebraska) rounds out the returning Sycamore frontcourt members.
Indiana State also welcomes the return of three players who were expected to play significant minutes in the 2021-22 season.
Adrian Folks (14.6 ppg, 5.8 rpg, 1.6 apg in five games),
Sommer Pitzer and
Hattie Westerfeld are all back after missing most of or all of the 2021-22 season due to injury.
Killinger added six newcomers to this year's squad, including three transfers.
Chelsea Cain (11.7 ppg, 5.9 rpg in three seasons at Nicholls State) headlines the transfers after previously earning First Team All-Southland Conference honors in 2020-21, while
Ella Sawyer (7.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 2.9 apg in three seasons at Austin Peay, 2019-20 OVC All-Newcomer Team) and
Alona Blackwell (8.0 ppg, 2.2 rpg in three seasons at Oakland, 2019-20 Horizon League All-Freshman Team ) add additional skill and experience to the Sycamore backcourt. Freshmen
Bella Finnegan, and
Lily Niebuhr, and junior
Tessa Lomax round out the newcomers.
The Sycamores will unveil their new $2 million video board in Hulman Center this season, courtesy of a donation from the Hulman-George family.
Indiana State kicks off its season November 3 with an exhibition against Lincoln (Mo.), followed by its regular season opener at the Hulman Center November 7 against Saint Louis. The Sycamores will play 18 times at home this season, with one exhibition and 17 regular season games at the Hulman Center on the docket.
