ST LOUIS – Indiana State women's soccer was picked to finished second in the Valley and three Sycamores were selected to the Preseason All-Conference Team in a vote by the league's coaches announced Tuesday.
The Sycamores received 94 points, trailing only Valparaiso who was picked to win the MVC while garnering eight first-place votes. Indiana State received one first-place vote as well as new MVC members Murray State and Belmont to round out the 11 votes.
Murray State (85), Drake (81) and Evansville (80) make-up the remainder of the top five followed by Belmont (67), UNI (64), Missouri State (51), Illinois State (45), UIC (29) and Southern Illinois (14).
Maddie Alexander,
Kloe Pettigrew and
CeCe Wahlberg were named to the All-MVC Preseason Team.
Alexander returns for her third season in the net for the Sycamores. She finished 2021 tied for first in MVC play with 56 saves which gave her 132 for her career to move her into sixth all-time at ISU. Alexander was named an All-MVC Second Team selection.
A native of Newton, Iowa, Pettigrew established herself as one of the anchors of the Sycamore defense, playing and starting in all 17 matches while leading the team with 1618 minutes on the field. She was named to the MVC All-Tournament Team.
Wahlberg was named to All-MVC First Team for second-straight season in 2021 played and started in all 17 matches. She led the Sycamores with 55 shots while putting 34 on goal. She scored a career-high six goals which was fifth in the MVC and tied for the team lead with three assists. Also now ranks second all-time in shots on goal (70), third in total shots (146) and ninth in total points (32).
Indiana State opens their regular season on Thursday with a road matchup at SIUE at 8 p.m. ET.
