ST. LOUIS – Indiana State softball had six players voted to the 2022 MVC Scholar-Athlete Teams, announced on Tuesday by the league office. Voting was conducted by league's sports information staff.
Amanda Guercio and
Lexie Siwek garnered First Team honors while
Lexi Benko,
Isabella Henning,
Olivia Patton and
Annie Tokarek were named to the Honorable Mention team.
The criteria for the Missouri Valley Conference's Scholar-Athlete Team voting parallels the CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America) standards for Academic All-America voting. Nominees must be starters or important reserves with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average (4.0 scale). Nominees in grad school must have a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better both as an undergrad AND in graduate school. Nominees must have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at an institution and must have completed at least one calendar year at the institution. True freshmen, red-shirt freshmen and ineligible athletic transfers are not eligible. Graduate students who are competing at a different institution than the one from which they earned their undergraduate degree are eligible even if they are in their first semester at the graduate institution. A nominee must have played in 50 percent of their team's games.
Guercio, a three-time MVC Honor Roll selection, had a 3.94 GPA in school counseling while hitting a career-high nine home runs this season. She finishes her Indiana State career sitting in second place in program history for home runs with 25.
Siwek, who was an Honorable Mention Scholar-Athlete selection in 2021, had a 3.885 GPA in nursing. A 2021 NFCA All-Region selection, Siwek finished her final season at ISU batting .322 while racking up 48 hits and 24 RBIs.
Henning, the 2021 MVC Freshman of the Year, had a 3.69 GPA in engineering. She batted .372 this season while collecting 55 hits including 12 doubles and seven home runs. Her 40 RBIs were a team-high for the Sycamores this season and puts her in second all-time for most RBIs in a single-season.
Benko, twice named to the MVC Honor Roll, had a 3.634 GPA in nursing. She led the Sycamores with 14 wins this season, the most by an ISU pitcher since 2017 while also striking out a career-high 104 batters.
Patton, a three-time MVC Honor Roll selection, had a 3.82 GPA while majoring in elementary education. She was second on the team with 28 runs scored while batting .275 and stealing five bases.
Tokarek, named an Honorable Mention Scholar-Athlete selection in 2020, had a 3.716 GPA in secondary education. She batted .300 with 39 hits while hitting seven home runs and driving in a career-high 24 runs.
The six Sycamores were a part of 32 student-athletes who were recognized by the conference. Missouri State's Daphne Plummer was given the Scholar-Athlete of the Year award.
