ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – A quartet of Indiana State track and field athletes faced top-tier competition Friday and Saturday, with two Sycamores taking home top-five finishes at the Don Kirby Elite Invitational inside the Albuquerque Convention Center.
JaVaughn Moore and
Ryann Porter placed third and fourth in their events, respectively, against the toughest field Sycamore athletes have faced this season.
Moore and
Shomari Rogers-Walton competed in the 60m against a field featuring multiple former Olympians, and both Sycamores shined in the event. Rogers-Walton was one of eight competitors to advance out of qualifying with a 6.84 in the first run. Moore posted the top time in prelims at 6.68 to advance to the finals, while Rogers-Walton ran a season-best 6.83. In the finals, Moore ran his third straight sub-6.70, posting a 6.66 to finish third.
Porter continued her Valley-leading season in the triple jump with yet another top-five finish. Clearing 12 meters with every jump she had, Porter's mark of 12.50m (41-00.25) on her first jump was her third-best this season and placed her fourth in a deep field, behind only a pair of nationally-ranked athletes from Cal and one unattached athlete.
Rogers Walton and
Frankie Young III took part in the long jump Friday, with Young III placing 12th (6.97m/22-10.50) and Rogers-Walton finishing 21st (6.83m/22-05.00). The duo still hold the top two marks in the Valley this season.
