Celebration of Title IX: Edith Godleski

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State Athletics continues its year-long celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Title IX today by recognizing the life and impact of Sycamore Hall of Famer Edith Godleski.

ISU Athletics will be spotlighting a different pioneer or trailblazer every month starting in August 2022 and carrying through June 2023. The ISU Title IX series is brought to you in partnership with the Hamilton Center.

Edith Godleski's impact on women's athletics went far beyond the basketball court during her time at Indiana State.

Godleski came to the Sycamores in 1967 as an assistant professor in women's physical education and was the director of women's intramurals. Following the formation of the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) in 1972, Godleski was instrumental in the creation of the Indiana AIAW (IAIAW) and the Midwest AIAW (MAIAW) along with ISU's Dr. Millie Lemen, former ISU Director of Athletics Andi Myers, and Dr. Eleanor St. John.

Godleski and Lemen both served on the Board of Directors for both the IAIAW and the MAIAW during the early years of both organizations.

Edith Godleski took over the basketball program in 1971 and had just three losing seasons over her 11 years. She is second all-time in career wins by an ISU women's basketball coach with 157 just behind former Sycamore head coach Jim Wiedie (166).

The Sycamores were 157-115 during her years as the head coach, making six appearances in the IAIAW tournament, winning both the 1976 and 1980 tournaments. Her squads also made five appearances in the MAIAW championships, finishing second in 1976 and third in both 1977 and 1982. Indiana State also made their first two appearances in the Women's NIT under Godleski's reign (1976 and 1977).

Five ISU Hall of Famers played women's basketball under Godleski's tutelage, including Ann Reifel, Jan Conner, Barbara Graves, Patricia Porter, and Denise Sharps.
