SAINT LOUIS – Indiana State soccer freshman
Kloe Pettigrew was named Freshman of the Week by the Missouri Valley Conference Friday, April 9, for her play in the Sycamores' win over in-state rival Evansville earlier this week.
Â
Pettigrew, who comes to Indiana State via Newton, Iowa, turned in another stellar defensive performance in ISU's 1-0 victory over the Purple Aces, playing all 90 minutes and helping the Sycamores to their sixth shutout of the season.
Â
Evansville managed just three shots in the second half of Wednesday's match thanks in large part to the defensive pressure orchestrated by Pettigrew. The Newton, Iowa native has anchored the ISU defense all season, playing in every minute of every match at center back.
Â
Pettigrew's Freshman of the Week is the third time Indiana State has earned the league's award for top rookie this season, with
Audrey Stephens (March 30) and
Maddie Alexander (March 9) also getting the honor.
Â
It marks the fifth time this season a Sycamore has won a weekly award from the Missouri Valley Conference, joining sophomore
CeCe Wahlberg's Offensive Player of the Week (March 16) and sophomore
Chloee Kooker's Defensive Player of the Week (March 2).
Indiana State finished the regular season 6-2 in Missouri Valley Conference play, setting the program record for wins in the Valley.
Â
The Sycamores host their first MVC Tournament match at Memorial Stadium since the 2004 season Wednesday, April 14 at 5 p.m. against the winner of No. 3 Valparaiso and No. 6 Evansville.
