TERRE HAUTE, Ind. --Â The Indiana State women's soccer team plays the finale of the 2021 spring regular season with a trip to in-state rival and Missouri Valley Conference foe Evansville Wednesday night at Arad McCutchan Stadium.
OPENING WHISTLE
- ISU broke the program record for Valley wins with its 2-0 defeat over Northern Iowa on Saturday. The fifth shutout win of MVC play against UNI broke the previous record of four league clean sheets, set by the 2013 and 2004 teams.
- Freshman Audrey Stephens made the magic happen for the second straight match, this time to put the Sycamores ahead 1-0 in the first half. The play, which featured a beautiful build initiated by senior Danielle Varner and played to Stephens by Anna Holcombe, put Indiana State ahead in the 14th minute.
- It was a welcome sight for ISU fans to see Holcombe return to the pitch against UNI, having missed the previous two matches. Her assist gives her two consecutive matches with points, having scored her first collegiate goal against Illinois State on March 13.
- For Varner, the assist marked her first of the season, a fitting tally for the senior playing her final regular-season match in Memorial Stadium.
- The goal that put the match out of reach for the Sycamores was the first of the young career of Carlie Jensen, who scored off an assist from Sidney Ewing in the 60th minute.
- With Jensen joining the scoring column, five Sycamores have now notched goals this season, led by CeCe Wahlberg, Audrey Stephens, and Katie Yankey with two each.
- Though without a goal so far this spring, Ewing leads Indiana State in assists with two.
- Audrey Stephens earned Freshman of the Week honors from the Valley after her OT goal at Missouri State March 28 and marked the fourth weekly award winner for the Sycamores this season. Stephens joined CeCe Wahlberg (OPOW), freshman Maddie Alexander (FOW), and sophomore Chloee Kooker (DPOW) in earning honors from the league.
- Freshman keeper Maddie Alexander registered her fifth clean sheet in seven Valley matches against Northern Iowa, making three saves against the Panthers on six total shots.
MATCH PREVIEW
- Indiana State will look to flip the script on Evansville Wednesday night, going for their first win over the Purple Aces since 2013.
- Though it has been seven seasons since the Sycamores last took down Evansville, that hasn't stopped ISU in other instances this season. During the spring campaign, the Trees beat UNI for the first time since 2014, defeated Missouri State in Springfield for the first time since 2013, and took down Illinois State in Normal for the first time in program history.
- ISU and UE have played one another 23 times in program history, with Evansville leading the all-time series.
-Â The last time the two played in Evansville, ISU fell 0-1 in overtime.
