TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State travels to West Lafayette Friday night for a matchup with the seventh-ranked Purdue Boilermakers at 8:30 p.m. ET. The game will air on Big Ten Network as well as on the radio on 105.5 The Legend in the Wabash Valley and on GoSycamores.com/Listen worldwide free-of-charge.
 
» For the first time in 12 years, the Indiana State basketball team will open the year under new leadership as first-year head coach Josh Schertz takes over the reins of the program. Schertz takes over after a 13-year run at NCAA Division II Lincoln Memorial University where he had a career record of 337-69 (.831) en route to four national coach of the year honors. Schertz led the Railsplitters to 10 NCAA Division II Tournament appearances, won 14 total conference championships and three Southeast Regional titles, and had five seasons of 30-or-more victories.
 
» Schertz announced prior to the opener that senior guard Tyreke Key will miss the 2021-22 season due to season-ending shoulder surgery. Key is a three-time All-MVC award winner and was named First Team All-MVC in the preseason.
 
» ISU is 14-46 against ranked opponents since the 1977 season. The Trees last win over a ranked foe came in 2016 against #15 Butler in Hulman Center. ISU's last road win over a ranked team came in 2013 against #21 Notre Dame.
 
» Friday's game against the Boilermakers will mark the 35th meeting all-time between the programs with Purdue owning a 30-4 advantage in the series which dates to 1902. It will mark the second consecutive season that the programs have met after the Sycamores fell 80-68 to Purdue in 2020. It will also mark the third time in the last four meetings that Purdue has been nationally ranked during the matchup. The last win for the Sycamores in the series came in 2006 when ISU defeated Purdue, 89-70. Indiana State also won back-to-back games in 1977 and 1978.
 
» Xavier Bledson made his Division I debut at Green Bay after transferring to Indiana State from Lincoln Memorial. The guard played all 40 minutes for the Sycamores after averaging just over 19 minutes a game at LMU a year ago. He was one of just seven players to play 40 or more minutes during opening night of college basketball. Bledson filled up the stats sheet with 15 points, five rebounds, two assists and a steal in his debut.
 
» Indiana State is coming off an 81-77 victory on the road at Green Bay. Four Sycamores scored in double-figures while Kailex Stephens led the way with 16 points and 13 rebounds in his first action as a Sycamore. Six of the eight that saw action made their ISU debut.
 
» ISU recently announced a $2 million a video board project at the Hulman Center. The project has been made possible entirely through private funding thanks to the Hulman-George family.
