TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's soccer will finish their regular season on the road Thursday when the Sycamores take on Southern Illinois at the Lew Hartzog Complex at 5 p.m. ET.
Last Time Out
The Sycamores played Illinois State to a 1-1 draw on Friday night at Memorial Stadium.
Illinois State had the momentum in the first half as they controlled possession for a majority of the period.
The Redbirds took a 1-0 lead in the 16
th minute as Alissa Ramsden scored on a feed from Kasey Neidhart for her first goal of the season.
CeCe Wahlberg tied the match at one with her sixth goal of the season in the 68
th minute. Wahlberg got a pass from
Sasha Thompson then turned and fired a shot from five yards outside of the box to where Redbirds goalie Priya Gillan could not reach it.
Audrey Stephens nearly put the match away in the first overtime period but Gillan made a nice save to keep the match tied.
The Redbirds put three shots on goal in the second overtime period but all were saved by
Maddie Alexander to end the match as a 1-1 tie.
Illinois State finished the match with 23 shots while Indiana State attempted 16.
Katie Yankey and
CeCe Wahlberg led the Sycamores with five shots each with
Maddie Alexander making a career-high 10 saves.
The draw moves Indiana State to 5-7-3 (3-2-2) on the season.
Sycamore Stats and Notes
CeCe Wahlberg has now scored in four consecutive matches which is the first time a Sycamore player has done that since Abby Reed in 2013.
Wahlberg's six goals this season give her 12 for her career which puts her in a tie for ninth-most all time in Sycamore history.
Maddie Alexander was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week for her career-high 10 save performance. It was the first time an Indiana State goalie had 10 or more saves in a match since 2014 when Brittany San Roman had 18 in a 1-1 tie against Belmont. An Indiana State player has won an MVC weekly award in four straight weeks.
Katie Yankey attempted a career-high five shots while putting four on goal.
The Sycamores have earned at least one conference point in six straight matches.
Indiana State can clinch the No. 3 seed in the MVC tournament with a win on Thursday. Friday's tie clinched a postseason spot for the second straight season.
The Opponent
Indiana State heads to Carbondale, Illinois to take on Southern Illinois for the final match of the regular season. The Salukis are in search of their first win of the season, coming into this match with an 0-14-1 (0-7-0) record.
This will be the second matchup between the two programs, with Indiana State winning 1-0 last year in Terre Haute. Southern Illinois soccer began MVC play last spring.
Grant Williams is in his third season as the head coach. He was hired in 2018 as the first coach in Saluki Soccer history.
Junior midfielder Christy Murauskis leads the team with three points this season. She scored the lone goal in Southern Illinois' last match against UNI.
Junior forward Emma Spotak was an All-MVC Second Team selection in the spring.
