ELON, N.C. – Indiana State baseball recorded its first weekend sweep of the season after defeating Elon, 6-2, Sunday afternoon inside Latham Park. With the win the Sycamores improved to 5-5 on the season while Elon dropped to 6-5.
Junior
Brian Fuentes drove in four runs to lead the Sycamores. His first two RBIs came on a two-run double in the second before a bases clearing single in the ninth. Freshman
Grant Magill drove in two runs of his own with a double in the second inning.
Freshman hurler
Cameron Edmonson (1-1) made his first start of the season for the Sycamores, going six and two-third innings en route to his first career win. Edmonson did not allow a base hit until the fourth inning of action and finished allowing four hits on the day. The Rochester, Illinois native retired six Phoenix hitters on strikeouts while walking three. The lone run against the lefty came on a wild pitch in the fourth inning.
Magill pushed Indiana State ahead in the second inning of action with a bases clearing double to down the line in left, scoring
Sean Ross and
Gavin Baker. ISU added to its lead in the fourth when Fuentes drove in his first two runs of the day after doubling to right.
Elon scored a run in the fourth on a wild pitch and a run in the eighth on a fielding error before ISU scored two insurance runs in the ninth inning on Fuentes' second two-run double of the day.
Tyler Grauer recorded his fourth save of the season after pitching the final inning and two-thirds. Right-hander
Jake Ridgway entered from the bullpen in the seventh after Elon loaded the bases with two outs. Ridgway needed just three pitches to get out of the jam as he induced a fly ball to centerfield.
Wabash Valley transfer
Miguel Rivera led the Sycamores with a 3-for-5 day at the plate that included a double and a run scored. Fuentes tallied two hits while five other ISU hitters recorded base hits.
Dean McCarthy went just four innings in his start for Elon, falling to 2-1 on the year. The left-hander struck out five but walked two while allowing eight base hits. Nick Cicci led the Phoenix with a 2-for-4 day at the plate.
Trevor Kirk steadied the ship for Elon out of the bullpen. He retired six Sycamores on strikeouts and did not allow a hit over three and a third innings.
Indiana State will play its home opener Tuesday afternoon as San Diego comes to town. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Bob Warn Field.
