PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – The University of Nebraska Omaha rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held on to secure a 3-2 victory over Indiana State Saturday at the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Spencer Koelewyn (1-0) threw six complete innings for the Mavericks en route to his first win of the season. In total, Koelewyn struck out three and allowed five hits. The lone mark on his record came in the fourth inning when
Brian Fuentes drove in
Jordan Schaffer from second with a single to right field to give Indiana State a 1-0 lead.
Omaha (4-2) wasted no time answering back as the Mavs went for three runs in the bottom of the fourth after loading the bases. Masen Prososki led off the frame with a four-pitch walk before being moved into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Parker Smejkal earned a free pass before Keil Krumwiede singled up the middle to load the bases with one out.
Grant Goldston would push across the tying run with a single through the left side of the infield before all baserunners advanced on a wild pitch, pushing across the go-ahead run. Garrett Kennedy would add another run in the inning on a sacrifice fly to center to push the Omaha lead to 3-1.
Manny Garcia cut the UNO lead in half with a sacrifice fly in the seventh, but ISU was unable to push another run across. Jack Mohler tossed the final frame for UNO, securing his third save of the season.
The fourth inning signaled the end of the day for Sycamore starting pitcher
Connor Cline. Cline finished his day with three earned runs, three hits, three strikeouts and four walks as he moved to 0-1.
Geremy Guerrero went three and a third innings in relief for the Sycamores, allowing one base hit and retiring two on strikeouts.
Zach Frey faced two batters in the final two outs of the eighth, retiring one on strikeouts.
Jordan Schaffer and
Brian Fuentes led the way for the Sycamores with two hits each while
Sean Ross and
Brandt Nowaskie tallied one hit apiece. Smejkal led UNO with two of the Mavs' four base hits.
ISU will close out the Snowbird Classic Sunday with Chicago State. First pitch with the Cougars is set for 1 p.m. with right-hander
Lane Miller set to make his first career start.
