PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Indiana State baseball finished a 10-day road swing Sunday with a 3-0 shutout loss at the hands of Chicago State in the finale of the Snowbird Baseball Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida.
Sycamore (2-4) bats tallied just three hits on the afternoon while Chicago State went for seven.
Dominic Cusumano tallied two base hits while
Brian Fuentes went for a single in the game. Patrick Arndt and Richard Paulino recorded two hits each for the Cougars. Arndt also drove in two runs for CSU.
It was a scoreless game until the fifth inning of action as Paulino led off the inning with a single through the left side. The Sycamores looked to get the leadoff man with a force out at second, but the ball was mishandled for an error. With two on and no outs, Judah Wilbur drove in what would be the game-winner run on a ball through the left side of the infield that bounced off of the glove of
Jordan Schaffer deep in the hole.
Christian Kuzemka dropped a single to center field to load the bases with no outs before Arndt drove in two more insurance runs with a single up the middle.
That would be all that Chicago State (2-6) would need as right-hander Vinnie Venturi was great on the mound during his seven and a third innings of work. He allowed just two base hits and struck out six as he improved to 2-1 on the season.
Freshman left-hander
Cameron Edmonson was dominant out of the bullpen for the Sycamores in his third appearance of the season. The Rochester, Illinois native worked four and two-third scoreless innings and struck out a career high nine of the 15 batters he faced.
Edmonson entered the game in the fifth with two on and one out and retired the first two batters he faced on strikeouts.
Lane Miller took the loss for the Sycamores, falling to 0-1 on the year. The right-hander struck out three while allowing two earned runs on six hits over four and a third innings.
Indiana State will continue its 11-game road swing to begin the year next week with a midweek matchup with Cincinnati on Wednesday before facing Elon in a three-game series beginning Friday.
