Kent State Downs Sycamores in Extras, 4-3

PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. – Indiana State baseball fell in 10 innings to Kent State, 4-3 on day two of the Snowbird Classic in Port Charlotte, Florida Saturday afternoon.

The Golden Flashes (1-1) used a trio of base hits in the 10th to score the go ahead run. Ben Carew and Michael Turner went for back-to-back one-out singles before Collin Mathews was hit-by-pitch with two outs to load the bases. Kent State's Patrick Ferguson would knock in the go-ahead run with a liner to shortstop that was corralled, but too late to make a throw to a base.

Indiana State (0-2) put the tying run on base in the bottom of the inning as Sean Ross reached base for the fifth time in the game. Miguel Rivera would put together a 10-pitch at bat but would eventually strikeout for the second out before Joe Kido flew out to end the game.

Jordan Schaffer led off the game with a walk before being moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Two batters later, Rivera would send the first run across the plate with a single to left. Kent State answered back with a run in the top of the second as a leadoff walk came around to score on a Ferguson single.

Designated hitter Mitch Barrow kept the pressure on the Golden Flashes with a leadoff double to left field to begin the second. Schaffer sent Barrow across the plate with a sacrifice bunt two batters later to put ISU back out in front.

Ross led off the third being hit by a pitch before Rivera sent him home on a double down the line in right to extend the Sycamore lead to 3-1.

Sycamore starting pitcher Tristan Weaver would settle in during the middle frames, retiring six of 10 hitters he saw on strikeouts in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Lane Miller came in from the bullpen in the seventh to make his ISU debut, but Kent State was able to pick up four base hits and a pair of runs to tie the game at three. KSU's Mack Timbrook reached on a hard-hit ball to third base to lead off the inning followed by two more singles to load the bases. Miller was able to work around a pair of hitters with a strikeout and a sacrifice fly before nine-hole hitter Grant Vera singled to tie the game.

The Sycamores would go to the bullpen once more in the seventh as lefty Tyler Grauer entered the game to record a strikeout and end the KSU threat.

Indiana State looked to regain the lead in the eighth as Ross led off the inning with a double and Rivera was hit-by-pitch. A bunt attempt to move the runners over by pinch hitter Joe Kido was popped to a charging Michael Turner at third base who was able to throw back to second to double up the Sycamores.

In total, Kent State outhit the Sycamores 11-6 in the game led by Carew and Ferguson who tallied three hits each. Ferguson added a pair of RBIs for the Golden Flashes.

Indiana State was led by Dominic Cusumano and Rivera with two hits each while Sean Ross dominated his at bats after reaching base on all five chances, including a double, two walks and a pair of hit-by-pitches to go along with a stolen base.

Weaver earned the no-decision after six strong innings on the mound, facing 21 batters. The lefty struck out eight Kent State hitters and allowed just two base hits. Miller went two-thirds of an innings allowing four hits and a pair of runs.

Tyler Grauer (0-1) took the loss for the Sycamores after tossing three and a third innings and striking out nine of the 16 batters he faced.

KSU starter Collin Romel went four innings and allowed three earned runs while Zach Schultz settled in to throw three scoreless innings. Max Rippl was credited with the win after facing seven batters and allowing just one hit in the eighth and ninth innings while Tyler Drabick earned the save.

The Sycamores continue play at the Snowbird Classic Sunday when they take on No. 24 Ohio State. Right-hander Connor Cline will toe the mound for the Sycamores.
