TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The Indiana State Track & Field teams will host their third consecutive indoor meet in the new Indoor Track and Field Facility with the
John Gartland Team Invitational this Saturday.

The
John Gartland Invitational is named for legendary Sycamore women's head coach and current volunteer assistant coach
John Gartland. As a head coach, Gartland coached 11 NCAA Champions, six NCAA runners-up, 50 All-Americans, 88 NCAA qualifiers, 200 MVC individual champions and 212 MVC Scholar-Athletes. He has been named the MVC or Gateway Coach of the Year 10 times (six in outdoor track & field, three in indoor track & field, and once in cross country) and the NCAA District V Coach of the Year four times (indoor track & field and outdoor track & field in both 1993 and 1994).

Indiana State will compete against DePaul, the Missouri State women, Southern Illinois, Valparaiso and Western Illinois for the inaugural
John Gartland Invite title. The meet will be scored per NCAA rules.

At their last outing, the Trees were defeated by Illinois State in the Coughlan-Malloy Cup, 173-150. The Sycamore men were defeated by a score of 88-73 while the women fell 85-77.

Once again, the women's throwers stood out for the blue and white with
Erin Reese putting on another phenomenal performance in the weight throw, winning the event for the second consecutive meet with a toss of 20.40m (66-11.25). Her mark of 21.81m (71-06.75) is still first in the Missouri Valley Conference and second in the nation.

Redshirt senior
Cassaundra Roper dominated the shot put for the Sycamore women, taking the event with the fourth-best toss in school history of 15.66m (51-04.50). She owns the best mark in the MVC and is 12th in the nation. Roper also took second in the weight throw behind Reese earlier in the day with a new personal-best throw of 19.29m (63-03.50), which is ninth in school history. Her mark is third in the Valley and 24th in the country.

Another stellar performance from the women come from
Brooke Moore who put forth a gutsy effort in the 800-meter run to win the event from behind. Trailing Hattie Plumb early on, Moore kicked it into another gear during the final 400-meters and ultimately finished with the seventh-fastest time in Indiana State history of 2:10.63. She owns the top time in the Valley and the third-best time in the nation.

On the men's side
Dearis Herron claimed another victory in the long jump, winning the event with a mark of 7.13m (23-04.75). His mark of 7.23 (23-08.75) from the Indiana State Early Bird is the third-best mark in the conference and 53rd in the nation. Later in the day Herron managed to complete the sweep in the jumps, winning the triple jump with a mark of 14.01m (45-11.75). His mark of 14.18m (46-06.25) from the Indiana State Early Bird is third in the MVC.

Freshman
Matthew Lewis-Banks claimed his second consecutive victory for the Sycamores in the men's 60-meter hurdles with an impressive and career-best time of 8.12, which is the second-fastest time in the Valley. He also placed second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.48, which converts to 22.09 for track size and is fifth in the conference.

After a stellar cross country season
Akis Medrano continued his distance dominance at the Coughlan-Malloy Cup, clocking a time of 8:35.27 in the 3000-meter run en route to a victory over Illinois State's Kyle Mattes. He now has the second-best time in the Valley after his time converted to 8:29.35.

Competition in the field is slated to begin at noon on Saturday with the track events to follow at 12:30 p.m.
