Jordan Barnes and Tyreke Key Set Career Highs In Road Victory At Green Bay

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- On the day when Indiana State head coach Greg Lansing earned career victory No. 134 to tie longtime Sycamore leader Royce Waltman for second on the ISU career coaching wins chart, junior Jordan Barnes and sophomore Tyreke Key each posted career highs as ISU earned a 78-74 victory over the Phoenix on the road.

Indiana State evened their season record at 1-1 while Green Bay did the same. The win makes it three in a row for the Sycamores over the Phoenix.

Coach Lansing earned career victory number 134 which ties his mentor Royce Waltman for second-most ever at ISU. Coach Waltman led ISU to the same amount of victories as well as a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances, the 2000 MVC Regular Season Championship and the 2001 Arch Madness Championship.

Barnes topped his previous career-best of 27 points with a pair of free throws with 10.1 seconds remaining as he finished with 29 off the bench. In a game in which 55 total fouls were whistled, Barnes finished the game with a 13-of-14 mark at the free throw line. Tyreke Key scored 16 points on three separate occasions last season and set a new career-high with 22 points. Key was 9-of-12 from the charity line.

Overall, ISU was 27-of-35 from the charity stripe, for a mark of 77.1 percent. The Sycamore did damage also on the boards, holding a 45-38 caroms edge with 11 offensive rebounds. Devin Thomas paced ISU with seven rebounds.

Also on the career-high train was Clayton Hughes who scored 10 points, including a huge second chance opportunity in the second half. Transition was a key to victory heading into the game and ISU owned a 12-6 edge in fast break points.

Trailing by a point and coming up empty on the offensive end with just under four minutes to go, Key came up a big steal and fast break lay-up plus the foul to push the Sycamores ahead by two points on the conventional 3-point play. Each team would trade a pair of empty possessions before Barnes was whistled for a foul away from the basket with just over a minute to go. He hit both charity tosses for a 72-68 advantage, but Green Bay countered with a trifecta to draw within a point with 58.8 seconds to go.

Barnes made it 25 for him in the game with a floater at the 36 second mark to push ISU ahead 74-71. ISU was whistled for a foul and Schwartz hit 1-of-2 to draw within a pair. Barnes was then fouled with 17 seconds to go and hit both to push the Sycamores back up 76-72. Schwartz hit a pair of free throws with 10.1 seconds to go but Barnes countered with two more of his own without any time elapsing to restore the 78-74 cushion. Green Bay came up empty on two final heaves in the last 10 seconds as ISU secured the victory.

Leading 40-33 at the half, the Sycamores regained a double digit advantage on the first possession after the break on career 3-pointer number 162 for Jordan Barnes. The trifecta gave ISU a 43-33 lead and then following Clayton Hughes' triple, Barnes converted a conventional 3-point play with just over 17 minutes on the clock to stretch the cushion out to 49-37.

The Phoenix drew within five points before Hughes drove to the rim and layed the ball in to regain a 51-44 advantage at the 14:46 mark. But Green Bay's Manny Patterson countered with a conventional 3-point play with just over 14 minutes on the clock and the Sycamore lead was down to just four points. Then Barnes connected from the left wing for his third 3-pointer of the game and was fouled. He added the charity toss as the Sycamores led 55-47. A wild scramble after a long pass from Barnes to Key ended in a jumper in the paint to give him a new career high in points and push the Sycamores ahead by eight points.

Green Bay whittled the lead down to 60-58 before Rickman hit 1-of-2 at the free throw line and then Barnes went over the 20-point mark with his fourth trifecta at the 8:57 mark to push ISU ahead 64-58. After a Phoenix score, Hughes had a huge second-chance runner in the paint to take a 66-60 advantage.

The Sycamores found themselves up 67-65 with just under five minutes remaining, when Sandy Cohen hit a trifecta to push Green Bay ahead 68-67.

Green Bay raced out of the gates to the tune of a 14-4 lead, before Tyreke Key buried a 3-pointer and then posted a fast break lay-up with just over 14 minutes on the clock to get ISU within 14-11 of the Phoenix. Key owned seven points before six minutes had elapsed in the contest. The Sycamores would take their first lead of the contest as the clock ticked under the 10 minute mark on a 3-pointer by Jordan Barnes to push ISU ahead 19-17.

Leading 21-20, the Sycamores would erupt on an 8-0 run which eventually forced Green Bay to call their second timeout of the opening stanza. The run began with a pair of Barnes charity tosses and continued as Key grabbed a steal and fast break lay-up before also scoring twice at the free throw line. Devin Thomas found the bottom of the net with 4:52 remaining before the half to give ISU a 29-20 cushion.

De'Avion Washington drained a 3-pointer from the right wing at the 5:07 mark to give ISU a 32-22 lead. It's interesting to note that both teams led by exactly 10 points in the first half. Green Bay owned theirs early at 14-4 and ISU later at 32-22. With just under four minutes on the clock, Thomas scored twice at the charity line and then Clayton Hughes hit a runner in the lane to stretch their cushion out to a game-high 12 points at 37-25 with 3:33 on the clock.

Eight of the first half's final 11 points came from Green Bay but the Sycamores took a 40-33 lead into the lockerroom. Blake Brinkmeyer had the last field goal of the opening stanza with just over three minutes remaining. Key paced Indiana State with 15 points -- just one shy of his previous career high set as a freshman.

Green Bay was paced by 16 points from Sandy Cohen.
