Sycamore Trio Picks Up All-Missouri Valley Conference Honors

ST. LOUIS -- A trio of Indiana State women's soccer players have garnered Missouri Valley Conference postseason honors as announced tonight by the league office at the annual postseason banquet ahead of the conference tournament on the campus of Loyola.

Senior Katie Wells, who left an indelible mark on the program and the women's soccer record book picked up All-MVC First Team honors. She was also a first team selection as a sophomore in 2016 as well as a second team pick in 2017. Wells was also a two-time MVC Scholar-Athlete pick in 2016 and 2017. Danielle Varner picked up All-MVC Second Team honors as a sophomore defender while Sidney Ewing, a forward, was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team.

Wells, a native of Indianapolis, Ind., was named All-MVC for the third consecutive season. Her senior season was spectacular, as she finished with 12 goals scored which broke the previous school record of 10 set by Abby Reed in 2013. Her 31 points this season crushed the previous school record of 25 set by Lauren Podolski in 2006. She finished the year with a 1.72 points per game average which topped the previous best of 1.39 set by Podolski in the 2006 campaign. Her seven assists this season were tops in the Missouri Valley Conference and third-best ever at ISU. Wells is tied for the record with Podolski as she tallied nine assists back in 2016 as a sophomore. She is just the second Sycamore in the history of the program to record at least 30 shots on goal as her total of 33 is second-best at ISU. Wells was named the MVC Offensive Player of the Week once during the year.

She finished her career with 67 points which is second in program history and only three behind Podolski's school record of 70. She finished with a 0.96 points per match average for second-best at ISU. Wells finishes her career with 24 career goals scored which was only one shy of Podolski's school record of 25. Her 69 career shots on goal are also second-best ever for Indiana State. Additionally, her ISU career wraps with 19 assists which was just one behind Podolski's school record of 20. She finished her career with six game-winning goals, including two during her senior season. Wells scored a goal in each of her last five matches as a Sycamore.

Varner was a second team selection as she played and started in all 18 matches for the Sycamores. She scored a pair of goals and added an assist for a total of five points on the season. Varner fired off 15 shots during the season, including five shots on goal. She scored her first goal of the season at Akron as she had three shots in the contest. Varner then added another goal as part of the eight goal outburst against Chicago State. She tallied an assist in conference play at Missouri State. Varner was named the MVC Defensive Player of the Week after the Sycamores completed a busy three-game road swing around the Labor Day weekend undefeated. It was her first career MVC Weekly honor.

Sidney Ewing, who was named to the MVC All-Freshman Team, played in 16 matches, earning 15 starts in her first season on campus. She scored three goals on the season and added two assists for a total of 8 points. Ewing tallied 16 shots on the season, including eight shots on goal. She earned the game winning goal when she scored early in the Chicago State match. Her first collegiate goal came in the 2-2 draw at Akron. She also tallied an assist in a key early season victory at SIU Edwardsville. Ewing posted a career-best two goals to go with an assist in the 8-0 blowout win over Chicago State to amass five points. She was named the MVC Freshman of the Week after the Sycamores split with Western Michigan and Chicago State.
