TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State came out firing on all cylinders from the opening tip as they opened the contest on a 16-0 run and never looked back en route to a 77-44 victory over Rose-Hulman in front of 3,675 fans inside Hulman Center.
Tickets to the game were only $5 in both the upper and lower levels with all proceeds going towards Indiana State University's 2019 build for Habitat for Humanity.
The Sycamores put three scorers in double figures as
Jordan Barnes and
Tyreke Key tied for game-high honors with 15 points each.
Devin Thomas added 13 as well. Both Barnes and Thomas were 7-of-15 from the field with Barnes connected on a 3-pointer. The Sycamores held a 42-35 edge on the glass as Thomas led the way with seven rebounds while
Blake Brinkmeyer tallied six boards to go with his five points. The hometown kid
De'Avion Washington posted nine points and added two rebounds with two assists.
ISU finished the game with 15 assists and nine steals, while forcing 19 Rose-Hulman turnovers and converting them into 22 points. The Sycamores controlled things inside with a 44-12 edge in the paoint and also held serve on the tempo with a 16-1 edge in fast break points.
Emondre Rickman nearly made it four starters in double figures as he finished with nine points and four rebounds.
The game was dubbed the Jim Shaw/Royce Waltman Classic in honor of one head coach from each program who have passed on after lengthy careers at the two Terre Haute schools.
ISU finished the game with a 49.2 percent shooting mark (32-of-65) and were 5-of-19 from long range (26.3 percent). Rose-Hulman connected on only 14-of-48 shots (29.2 percent).
Key got things going for ISU by scoring the game's first four points before Barnes connected with a fast break lay-up and Deveon Thomas added a triple for the 9-0 lead less than three minutes into the game. Washington's 3-pointer at the 14:17 mark of the first half staked ISU to a 16-0 cushion before Samvit Ram hit a 3-pointer to score first for the Fightin' Engineers.
Rose-Hulman would get a two-pointer from Callahan with 2:34 left in the contest to draw within 13 points, but Rickman followed a Thomas free throw to regain the 34-18 advantage. Rickman's free throw with 44 seconds left gave ISU a 35-21 halftime advantage.
The Fightin' Engineers scored five of the first seven points to opent he second half and got within 35-26 before Barnes drained a long jumper to regain a 37-26 advantage. Rose was within 11 points before the Sycamores got cooking to the tune of an 11-0 run which was capped inside by
Bronson Kessinger for the 50-28 lead with 13 minutes to go. A decisive 6-0 run late in the second half put the game away when Brinkmeyer scored off the alley-oop from Washington with 3:33 remaining for the 74-39 advantage -- the Sycamores' largest cushion of the game.

Tyeshon Martin hit a charity toss with 18 seconds remaining to give ISU the 77-44 victory.
Rose-Hulman was led by former Terre Haute North Vigo HS star Charlie Aimone who scored 11 points.
ISU now turns its attention towards the regular season when they travel to Ball State on Tuesday, November 6. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. (ET) from James Worthen Arena and will be televised live world-wide on ESPN3.
