Box Score GREEN BAY, Wis. – Sycamore women's soccer faced off with the Phoenix of Green Bay tonight after making the trip to Wisconsin for a set of road matches. Indiana State defeated the Phoenix 2-0 recording their first road victory of the season.
"Anytime you can get a result on the road we will take it. At times it wasn't pretty, but we found a way to win tonight and I was proud of the fight our team showed," said head coach
Julie Hanley.
The first half of play proved to be a battle of the defenses as the Sycamores only posted three shots with Green Bay taking five, and only one being on goal. Indiana State was able to block multiple shots along with preventing the Phoenix from breaking through the backline.
Between the two teams Indiana State generated the most threatening offensive attack throughout the half.
Alina Steffen,
Tessa Leong and
Katie Wells all came away with solid chances for ISU.
The Sycamores continually broke through the Green Bay backline, but were off by inches either on the pass or on their timing. ISU was called offside three times during the first half of play.
The score remained 0-0 as both teams headed to the locker rooms for halftime.
Indiana State struggled to get anything going to start the second half with Green Bay coming out firing. The Phoenix notched five early shots, but were unable to capitalize on any chances.
This momentum quickly shifted back into the Sycamores favor in the 68
th minute when freshman
Jensen Margheim recorded her first goal of the season giving ISU the lead.
Katie Sidloski and
Jazlyn Rowan charged down the right flank for Indiana State, stringing together passes and slotting a ball into the box where Margheim put it in the back of the net.
Only seven minutes later the Sycamores extended their lead to 2-0 when Sidloski scored a back post header goal off a
Caitlyn Eddy corner kick.
Sidloski put on an impressive performance for the Sycamores recording total of three points during the match after notching one goal and one assist. The assist from Eddy is also notable as it is her fourth of the season keeping her the leader in this statistical category.
"
Katie Sidloski had a great game tonight and it was nice to see her have a breakout performance," said Hanley.
Indiana State recorded seven shots throughout play with six being on goal.
Hannah Sullivan came away with four total saves.
The Sycamores are back in action on Sept. 3 for their second road match of the weekend. Indiana State will face off with the Panthers of Milwaukee inside Engelmann Stadium at 3 p.m. (ET).
