Head coach
Julie Hanley, now entering her second season at the helm, led ISU to their first conference tournament appearance since 2013 after a fourth place finish in the regular season followed by a nail biting penalty kick win over the Drake Bulldogs to secure a spot in the semifinal match.
This run ended in a heartbreaking overtime loss to the Illinois State Redbirds.
ISU placed five student athletes to all-conference teams as well as having three earn all-academic honors following the 2016 season.
This year Indiana State welcomes ten freshmen and three transfers to the soccer family after saying goodbye to six seniors. These student-athletes come from all over including Nevada, Pennsylvania, Iowa, Virginia and New Zealand, bringing with them high level club soccer experience.
Along with new faces on the field, coach Hanley has welcomed two new assistants.
Sam Schroeder was the former head women's soccer coach at Ripon College and Alex Mattson coming to Indiana State from his head coaching position at Lakeland College.
Indiana State will compete in two exhibition matches to prepare for regular season play which opens on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium vs. UIC.
"We are really excited as a staff to welcome the new additions for the 2017 season and feel that their abilities will be important to our success this year. The exhibition matches will be used as a great opportunity for us see the team compete against challenging opponents and help us better prepare for regular season play," said Hanley.
The first exhibition matchup puts the Sycamores up against Austin Peay. In 2016 the Governors posted a 10-6-4 record, their highest win total since 2013, with a 5-2-3 record in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Following this match Indiana State will hop back on the bus on Aug. 12 to face off with Eastern Kentucky at 2 p.m. in Richmond, Ky. The Colonels finished 2016 with a 13-5-1 record and advanced to the OVC championship match where they fell by a one goal margin to SIU Edwardsville.
