Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State women's soccer came away with a 1-1 tie in their match today (Aug. 20) with the Eastern Illinois Panthers.
With temperatures in the upper eighties both teams started off sluggish when the whistle blew. Neither side was able to generate any threatening offensive attack or break through the others backline.
Indiana State was the first to pick up the pace and earned themselves some good chances throughout play. Then in the 33
rd minute
Katie Wells was able to deflect a
Caitlyn Eddy corner kick into the net putting the Sycamores up 1-0.
Going into halftime ISU remained strong and didn't allow Eastern any scoring chances. However, this momentum shifted starting in the second half.
The Panthers came out firing earning themselves an early corner kick. After a scrum inside the box the ball bounced out and EIU's Emma Scarro ripped a shot off the crossbar. With Indiana State goalkeeper
Hannah Sullivan still recovering from her dive Pilar Barrio was able to follow up the rebound and slot a shot into the net tying the game at 1-1.
After this Indiana State had trouble regaining control of the match and both teams struggled with the physicality of play.
When the final whistle blew after 90 minutes the score was still even.
Going into overtime the tone shifted back into ISU's favor, but the Sycamores struggled to find the back of the net.
Eddy was continually sending balls forward from the central midfield, but everything was off by inches in the final third of the field and this remained true until the end of play.
"I can't fault the effort. The players that were out there and the players that came off the bench were fantastic. I think Friday we did a lot of good things offensively and today was a battle. Sunday games are always a little bit of a grind and I give Eastern Illinois credit, they stuck to their game plan and shut us down," said head coach
Julie Hanley.
Indiana State came away with 12 shots and Sullivan had six saves on the day.
The Sycamores are back in action on Aug. 25 inside Memorial Stadium yet again to face off with Northern Kentucky. The game will be aired live on ESPN3.
