Anthony Bertoli returns to Indiana State as Track & Field Assistant Coach

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State Track & Field Program Director Angela Martin has announced the hiring of former Sycamore Anthony Bertoli as an assistant coach. He will specifically assist in multi-events and the pole vault.

Bertoli comes back to Indiana State after a six-year stint at the University of Northern Iowa as an assistant coach for the pole vault, multi-events, sprints/hurdles and javelin.

"Our staff is really excited that Anthony is returning to ISU," Coach Martin said. "He has developed into a very good coach through his experiences at Troy and Northern Iowa. He is a true Sycamore and fits in well with our family atmosphere.  Anthony has coached several All-Americans and has great meet management experience. His background of multi-events and pole vault will help us grow that area of our team. We are all proud to welcome Anthony and Stephanie and their girls back home to Terre Haute."

While at UNI, Bertoli has had the opportunity to coach some of the nation's best athletes in multi-events and short sprints. Most recently, Bertoli coached the standout UNI sprinter, Brandon Carnes, in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, Carnes captured the MVC Outdoor Championships in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, earning a trip to the NCAA West Regional for both and a trip to the NCAA Finals in Eugene for the 100, where he earned Honorable Mention All-American honors. During the indoor season, Carnes won both the 60 and 200-meter dashes at the MVC Indoor Championships, and went on to earn Second-Team All-American honors in the 60-meter dash at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. During the 2015 season, Carnes won the same events at the MVC championships as 2016, and competed at the outdoor NCAA West Regional in the 100 and 200-meter dashes. At the 2015 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Carnes earned Second-Team All-American honors in the 200.

Bertoli also had the chance to coach former UNI standout and All-American Paige Knodle, who in 2016 set MVC records in both the pentathlon and 60-meter hurdles at the MVC Indoor Championships, and earned a berth to the NCAA Indoor Championships in the pentathlon, where she earned Second-Team All-American honors. During the 2016 outdoor season, he coached Knodle to two MVC Championships in the 100 and 400-meter hurdles, as well as Most Valuable Female Athlete and Most Outstanding Female Track Athlete. She went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in the heptathlon with an eighth-place finish and a UNI record 5,833 points. Bertoli has also worked with UNI and MVC greats Ethan Miller and Daniel Gooris, both of whom earned All-American honors while working with him.

Prior to his time at UNI, Bertoli served as an assistant coach at Troy University in 2011 and a volunteer assistant coach at Indiana State in 2010. He was an athlete on the ISU track team from 2005-2009, and he is excited to return home and get to coach at his alma mater.

"I'm really excited to rejoin the Sycamore family and get the chance to work with Coach Martin again," Bertoli said. "I would like to thank Angie, Sherard and Indiana State for giving me this opportunity, and I would like to thank Dave Paulsen and UNI for their understanding through this whole process. Indiana State has some of the best administrative support in the country, and I'm excited to move forward and begin working towards conference championships and creating All-Americans."

Bertoli will be the fifth Sycamore alum on the staff, joining Coach Martin and assistant coaches Jeff Martin, Darrow Ramsey and Kyle Walsh.

"Our track and field and cross country programs have had a lot of success with coaches who have Indiana State ties. I am proud to continue that path by adding another alum to our staff," Coach Martin said.

During his time as a volunteer assistant for the Sycamores, Bertoli had the opportunity to work alongside Coach Jeff Martin in helping coach a Sycamore legend, Kylie Hutson, who is an MVC record-holder and four-time NCAA Champion in the pole vault.

As an athlete at ISU, Bertoli earned All-MVC honors in the decathlon in 2009 with a third-place finish and 6,674 points, as well as earned an NCAA Mid-East Regional berth in the 400-meters. At the 2009 MVC Indoor Championships, Bertoli finished fourth in the heptathlon with 5,025 points. In 2008, Bertoli placed sixth in the heptathlon at the MVC Indoor Championships with 5,189 points, which was a school-record up until 2013 when Bobby Webb recorded 5,405 points at the same event. Bertoli was also a member the team championship captured at the 2006 MVC Outdoor Championships.

Bertoli graduated from Indiana State in 2009 with a degree in Exercise Science. He is currently certified by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) as a jumps and a throws specialist. He is also a USA Track & Field (USATF) Level II jumps coach. He has attended USATF Emerging Elite Coaches Camps for both jumps and combined events.

Even before Anthony began his athletic career at ISU, the Bertoli family was a part of the Sycamore community, as his father, Jim Bertoli, was the head volleyball coach at Indiana State from 1997-2003.

Fun fact, Bertoli and his father not only found success on the track and court, they also had the brains to compete on "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" during a 2002 Father's Day edition, where they ended up making it to the $125,000 question before walking away with $32,000.

As if that wasn't interesting enough, Bertoli's great-grandfather is the famous Orville Redenbacher; the same Orville Redenbacher who's iconic red-boxed popcorn is sold in stores all around the country.

Bertoli is a native to Terre Haute, Ind., and is married to Stephanie. Stephanie and Anthony have two daughters, Bianca Rose who is two, and Cecilia who joined their family in July.
