Baseball Knocks Off No. 12 Washington, 4-2

SEATTLE - Senior Ryan Keaffaber put together his best outing of the season as the Indiana State baseball team knocked off No. 12 Washington, 4-2 at Husky Ballpark Friday night to open a four-game set with UW.

The southpaw went six complete en route to his first win of the season, striking out five batters and allowing only one run. The Wabash, Indiana native set the tone for Husky hitters throughout his night, tossing first pitch strikes to 18 of the 25 batters he faced.

It was a pitcher's duel for the better half of the game as both Keaffaber and UW's Noah Bremer were able to manage both teams through the first three innings.

Bremer recorded six of his seven strikeouts on the night in the first four innings. He retired six-straight Sycamore hitters on strikes from the first to third innings before the Sycamores were able to get the offense going.

ISU (6-7) did get on the board in the fourth after Clay Dungan, Tony Rosselli and Chris Ayers each singled to load the bases. Dane Giesler brought home Dungan from third but traded the run for two outs as the designated hitter grounded into a double play.

Washington (7-5) looked to answer the call in the bottom half of the fourth after Jack Meggs doubled to left with two outs but again, Keaffaber was able to work out of the jam, forcing a groundout to the second baseman Dungan to end the threat.

Kyle Moore doubled the Sycamore lead in the sixth as he doubled home Rosselli from third on a ball that was just a few feet away from a home run.

It wasn't until the seventh that Washington really put together a scoring threat. The Huskies led off the inning with a single that signified the end of Keaffaber's day as ISU went to the bullpen in Damon Olds in relief. Olds could not hold the runner at first though, giving up an RBI triple to put Washington on the board. The right-hander would settle down and retire final two batters with the help of the glove of first baseman Jeff Zahn who made a diving stop for the second out of the frame.

The Sycamores answered Washington's run with two of their own in the eighth after Dungan doubled to right for his third hit of the day before being sent home on an Ayers single to right. Zahn drove in the final run of the night for ISU on a sacrifice fly.

The Huskies put a scare in the Sycamores in the eighth and ninth innings, putting men on in both. After Trent Lunsford was unable to find the zone out of the bullpen, ISU went to Ethan Larrison in the eighth who ended UW's bases loaded scoring threat by inducing a 5-4-3 double play.

UW pulled to within 4-2 in the ninth before Austin Conway recorded his third save of the year closing out the game with a strikeout.

Indiana State was led at the plate by Dungan who finished 3-of-5 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI. Ayers went 2-of-4 with a run and RBI.

The Sycamores finished the day 7-of-16 (.438) with runners on base and 3-of-9 with runners in scoring position.

Indiana State is scheduled to play a doubleheader Saturday with Washington starting at 5 p.m. ET with the second contest slated for 40 minutes after game one. With the threat of rain in the area, be sure to stay tuned to @IndStBaseball for the latest updates for game times.
