STARKVILLE, Miss. – Sycamore baseball closed out its weekend in Starkville with a 3-1 win over Marist Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. Indiana State pitchers combined to allow just four hits in the game.
The Sycamores (3-4) scored a pair of runs in the first off the bat of senior
Tony Rosselli after he singled to left scoring
Dane Giesler and
CJ Huntley.
Marist answered those runs with one of their own in the second on an RBI groundout. The Red Foxes (4-2) had opportunities in the second to push across more in part to a fielding error by ISU but starting pitcher
Jeremy McKinney worked himself out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
Dominic Bifano added an insurance run in the third, coming around to score on an error on a bunt to give the Sycamores a 3-1 lead.
Indiana State would not look back as pitching carried the Trees to their third win of the year led by McKinney (2-0) who went five complete innings giving up just two hits. The redshirt junior recorded nine strikeouts in the outing. The only run scored while McKinney was on the mound was unearned.
Sycamore pitching struck out 17 Marist batters on the day.
Trent Lunsford sat down six on his own in three and a third innings of shutout work while
Austin Conway struck out the only two batters he faced in route to the save.
ISU outhit Marist 8-4 on the day and made their opportunities with runners on count going for four hits including three hits with two outs.
The Sycamores will begin their West Coast swing next weekend as they head to Orem, Utah for a four-game series against Utah Valley beginning Friday.
