OREM, Utah – Indiana State baseball came up just short in their series opener against Utah Valley, falling to the Wolverine, 7-6 at Brown Field.
The Sycamores (4-4) went into the ninth tailing Utah Valley 7-5 but back-to-back singles from
Tyler Friis and
Dominic Bifano gave ISU the spark it needed to start the rally.
CJ Huntley moved the runners over on a sacrifice bunt before
Dane Giesler loaded the bases after being hit by a pitch.
Indiana State would pick up a run on a passed ball but that would be it as Patrick Wolfe retired
Tony Rosselli on strikes to secure the win for UVU.
ISU was led at the plate by Friis who finished with three hits in five plate appearances. Bifano and Rosselli added a pair of hits each in the game.
It was a back and forth game early on as Indiana State scored the first three runs of the game, first in the third when Bifano drove in
Kyle Moore on a sacrifice fly followed by a pair of runs in the fourth on a fielding error by the Wolverines.
Utah Valley (2-6) answered back in the bottom half of the fourth with a pair of runs of their own before ISU plated another run on an error in the fifth. UVU went on to score five runs in the seventh and eighth innings to capture the momentum and hold on for the win.
Will Kincanon did not earn a decision after going 6.2 innings in his third start of the year. He allowed four runs and struck out seven on the night.
Ethan Larrison was charged with the loss in his first appearance of the year after giving up a pair of runs in the eighth.
Eric Olguin (1-1) was credited with the win after pitching just two-thirds of an inning while Patrick Wolfe earned his second save of the year.
The Sycamores return to action Saturday with a doubleheader against Utah Valley beginning at 2 p.m. ET from Brown Field.
Jeremy McKinney is scheduled to get the start in game one while
Tyler Ward will get the ball in the second game.
