Hot Shooting Sycamores Take Down Drake

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State connected on a total of 10 3-pointers and hit over 50 percent of their shots as they took down visiting Drake, 84-60, in front of 4,280 fans inside Hulman Center.

The Sycamores won their second consecutive game and for the third time in their last four tries to improve to 10-16, 4-10 MVC. Drake lost for the fifth straight game and fell to 7-19, 5-9 MVC. Indiana State has defeated Drake four times in a row at home and when this win is combined with the road victory over Bradley, it is the first back-to-back victories for the Sycamores since a November 30- December 7 stretch of wins against Northern Illinois, Utah State and nationally-ranked Butler.

The win was seventh-year head coach Greg Lansing's 119th of his career and puts him just one victory shy of tying John Longfellow for fifth all-time at Indiana State. The Sycamores improved to 79-9 under coach Lansing when holding teams to 63 points or less.

Brenton Scott led the way with 20 points as he hit four 3-pointers and added seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Scott now has 1,255 career points as he moved up to 15th all-time on the ISU scoring chart. Additionally, Scott now has 199 career 3-pointers made and needs just one more to join Michael Menser and Jordan Printy as the only Sycamores to record at least 200 trifectas in their career.

Laquarious Paige tallied 14 points and set a new career high with seven rebounds. Everett Clemons had yet another solid all-around game with 11 points, seven rebounds and seven assists. The Sycamores set a season high with 22 assists.

The Sycamores finished the by making 10 3-pointers and hit 35-of-67 shots from the field (52.2 percent). Indiana State won the rebounding battle 44-38, led by nine from Emondre Rickman. Rickman tallied eight points and set a new career high with six blocked shots. His six blocked shots are the most by a Sycamore since Josh Crawford had seven at Evansville on January 31, 2010.

Drake actually led early when Nick McGlynn hit a 3-pointer on the Bulldogs' first possession. A Reed Timmer free throw staked them to an 8-6 lead before a Scott lay-up and Clemons conventional 3-point play at the 15:55 mark made it 11-8. Billy Wampler's jumper at the 15:18 mark cut the Sycamore advantage down to just one point, but a dunk from TJ Bell kick started an 11-0 run which was capped by a Paige free throw with 12:11 on the clock as ISU led 22-10. Timmer ended a four minute plus stretch with no buckets when with 10:49 on the clock he connected on a lay-up and the Sycamore lead shrunk to 22-12.

Wampler's jumper at the 3:40 mark cut the Sycamore lead down to eight points, but Jordan Barnes answered with a 3-pointer and then Clemons hit a lay-up with just under two minutes remaining as the sycamores led 40-27. Timmer hit a pair of free throws with just under minute left before halftime as the Sycamores took a 42-31 lead into the break. Brenton Scott led the way for the Sycamores with 12 points in the first half.

The Sycamores took a strangle hold on the game in the first three minutes of the second half as they went on a 15-0 run which began with a jumper from Scott and featured consecutive 3-pointers from Scott, Van Scyoc and Scott again as the lead grew to 57-31 with 17:09 remaining. Graham Woodard scored first for Drake in the second half with a jumper at the 16:52 mark.

Barnes hit another 3-pointer with 10:26 on the clock to restore a 64-41 lead. De'Antae McMurray drilled a 3-pointer with 4:39 remaining as Drake would get as close as 18 points at the 70-52. But the Sycamores got a jumper from Paige and consecutive 3-pointers from Barnes and Paige at the 3:40 mark and the Sycamores led 78-52. Donovan Franklin's driving lay-up with 1;26 to go made it 85-58 but C.J. Rivers scored with 1:14 remaining as the Sycamores won going away, 84-60.

Reed Timmer led the way for Drake with 15 points and added six rebounds.

Indiana State now sets their sights on Loyola as they travel to Chicago on Wednesday, February 15 to take on the Ramblers. Tip-off is set for 8:00 p.m. (ET) and will televised live world-wide on The Valley On ESPN3.
