Sycamores Drop Four Overtime Heartbreaker Against Ohio

CHARLESTON, S.C. -- Indiana State played its first quadruple overtime game in 31 years and only the second in the history of the program in their final game of the Gildan Charleston Classic. It proved to be a heartbreaker as the Sycamores had a look at the final buzzer that didn't go in falling 96-94 to Ohio at TD Arena.

The Sycamores fall to 1-3 overall while Ohio improved to 2-2.

This was the first double overtime game for the Sycamores since an 88-85 win at home over Eastern Illinois on December 21, 2016. Additionally, it became the first Sycamore game to reach triple overtime since 2011 at Wichita State. The game against Ohio is only the second to go quadruple overtime with the other on December 27, 1986 against Butler.

Devin Thomas led the way with 17 points as he hit 12 free throws. Jordan Barnes added 16 points while Qiydar Davis posted 15 points and 15 rebounds. The 15 rebounds top his previous career which of 14 from his days at Louisiana Tech. It was the Sycamores' first double-double of the season.

Tyreke Key added 14 before fouling out in overtime and Brenton Scott added 11 while Emondre Rickman tallied 10 off the bench. This game was the first time since the triple overtime game at Wichita State in 2011 in which the Sycamores have placed six scorers in double figures.

The Sycamores blazed the nets to a 46 percent mark in the first half, but hit just 7-iof-25 shots (28 percent) in all the overtimes, including a 1-of-8 mark from long distance. The Sycamores made just two buckets in the final eight minutes of regulation as well but still had looks to win the game at the end of regulation plus all four overtimes.

Ohio would draw within two points late but a steal by Barnes and lay-up by Key with 2:42 to go gave the Sycamores a 63-59 lead. That broke a nearly five minute stretch for the Sycamores where their only points came at the free throw line. Ohio would tie the game at 63 on a pair of free throws from Laster with 59 seconds left. Jordan Dartis had a step back look from 3-point range but it didn't go and the Sycamores called a timeout with 3.2 seconds left and the game still knotted at 63. Barnes then raced down the court and had a fade away look from 3-point land which glanced off the rim to send the game into overtime.

Gavin Block scored from 3-point range to push Ohio ahead but Davis scored inside with 2:35 remaining to cut the Bobcat lead down to 66-65. Scott then hit a long jumper with 59 seconds to go to put the Sycamores ahead 67-66 and he moved into the ISU all-time career scoring Top 10 in the process. Dartis answered with a driving lay-up at the 36 second mark for Ohio as they regained the 68-67 advantage. Thomas was fouled with 17 seconds to go and hit a free throw to knot the game at 68. For the second time in the game, the Sycamores got a big defensive stop with a Devin Thomas rebound and Barnes had a look from midcourt which glanced off the backboard.

Indiana State's defense got a stop and Barnes was fouled in the back court. He hit both free throws to push the Sycamores ahead 70-68. After Davis grabbed his 13th rebound of the game, Murphy was fouled after an offensive rebound where he hit both free throws for a four point lead. Then Tyreke Key grabbed a big defensive rebound and on the offensive end Davis stole the ball away and put the ball back in for the 74-68 cushion with three minutes to go.

Key then hit the biggest shot of his young Sycamore career with 1:28 to go when he connected on a 3-pointer to stake ISU to a 77-68 lead. Barnes would hit a free throw with 20 seconds left but Block connected on a 3-pointer with 13 seconds to go which knotted the score at 81 and sent the game into triple overtime.

Murphy started the overtime with a dunk off the feed Scott for the 83-81 lead. Indiana State began with a defensive stop and Murphy was fouled after grabbing a rebound before he hit a free throw with 3:26 to go for the 84-81 advantage. Kirk would score on a driving lay-up with 1:57 remaining to draw the Bobcats within 84-83. Ohio hit 1-of-2 free throws after being fouled on a baseline drive to tie the game for fifth time at 84. Then after Barnes missed a 3-pointer, Thomas was fouled on a rebound with 50 seconds to go and he hit both but Kirk answered with a lay-up to once again tie the score at 86.

To start the fourth overtime period, Davis hit a jumper at the 4:15 mark but the game was quickly tied at 88 when Kirk answered to go over 20 points. Thomas was then fouled with 3:31 remaining and hit 1-of-2 free throws for the 89-88 lead. Each team traded turnovers before Davis came up with the ball and was fouled as he hit both charity tosses with 2:44 to go for the 91-88 lead. Dartis became the third Bobcat to score 20 points when he tied the game with a 3-pointer at the 2:34 mark. Ohio would go on to take the lead with 1:35 left in the fourth overtime on a lay-up by Laster.

Trey Knight III grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled by Laster to send him out of the game and Knight to the free throw line with 1:12 left. He would hit one to trim the Bobcat lead down to 93-92, but a conventional 3-point play by Block with 45 seconds left stretched their lead out to 96-92. Davis answered with a lay-up to make it 96-94. Scott had a look at the rim from 3-point range but the ball bounced off the back of the rim.

Ohio took an early 3-0 lead but a pair of Devin Thomas free throws followed by a 3-pointer by Jordan Barnes on the Sycamores' next possession staked ISU to a 5-3 advantage. Trifectas from Thomas and then Brenton Scott in the first four minutes gave the Sycamores leads of 8-3 and then 11-5 before the initial media timeout. The cushion swelled to six points at 13-7 as the clock ticked towards the 15 minute mark on a put back bucket from Scott. Barnes then connected on a 3-pointer plus a steal and score with 13:19 to go stretched the lead out to 18-9.

Tyreke Key stopped a Bobcat mini-run with the Sycamores' fifth 3-pointer of the first half as he buried one from the top of the circle at the 11:48 mark and the lead swelled back to 21-14. Key then had a steal and fast break lay-up as the clock moved under the 10 minute mark which put the Sycamores ahead 25-14.

The Sycamores grabbed a 31-16 lead on a pair of Devin Thomas charity tosses at the 5:45 mark which was their biggest lead until Davis drilled a 3-pointer with 4:03 remaining which pushed the advantage up by another point to 34-17. A lay-up by Brenton Scott at the 1:40 mark pushed the Sycamores ahead 40-22 -- and pushed him ahead of Matt Renn for 11th on the ISU all-time scoring list. Devin Thomas paced the Sycamores with 11 points at the break.

The Bobcats scored on their first two possessions of the second half to get within 12 points before Rickman scored inside with 18:27 on the clock to regain a 42-28 advantage. Ohio then scored four more in a row by a Davis jumper from the free throw line rattled home at the 17:20 mark to reestablish a 44-32 lead. Barnes then buried his third 3-pointer of the game followed by a Bronson Kessinger lay-up at the 16:23 mark to cap a 7-0 run for a 49-32 lead. Key gave the Sycamores another 17-point cushion when he buried a corner 3-pointer at the 15:09 mark for a 52-35 cushion.

Rickman got the lead back out to 15 points but a 3-pointer from Ohio's James Gollon at the 10:44 mark drew the Bobcats' deficit down to 55-42 with 10:44 remaining. A 3-pointer by Mike Laster with nine minutes remaining made it 55-47 as the Sycamores' struggled to find the bottom of the basket. It became a 10-0 run for the Bobcats on a Jordan Dartis lay-up with 8:10 remaining which forced the Sycamores to burn a timeout as the lead had shrunk down to 55-49. The answer was an Emondre Rickman bucket inside which pushed him into double figures scoring and stretched the lead back out to 57-49.

But Ohio grabbed 3-pointers on consecutive trips to make it just a 57-55 lead for the Sycamores with 6:52 remaining to give the Bobcats 16 of the last 18 points scored. Laster came out of a timeout with a jumper inside which knotted the score at 57 with 6:07 on the clock. On the next trip down, Scott was fouled driving to the lane and he hit both charity tosses to reclaim a 59-57 lead. The Sycamores grabbed a defensive stop before Thomas was harmed inside and he hit both of his charity tosses to stake the Sycamores to a 61-57 lead with 5;23 to go.

Ohio was led by Mike Laster who scored 25 points. Three different Bobcats went over 20 points in the game.

Indiana State makes their regular season debut at Hulman Center on Wednesday, November 22 when they host Missouri-St. Louis. Please note the early tip-off time of 5 pm (ET) for this game prior to the Thanksgiving Holiday.
