TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Indiana State used a balanced scoring attack to down visiting Missouri St. Louis by the score of 75-58 in front of 2,612 fans inside Hulman Center.
ISU improved to 2-3 on the season while UMSL remains at 2-2 as they used this game as one of two exhibition contests.
Qiydar Davis reached double figures scoring for the fourth time in the last five games as he led the way with 14 points. Davis was 4-of-5 from the field and 6-of-7 from the charity stripe.
Brandon Murphy tallied 12 points in a starting role. No one else added to double figures scoring total by
Brenton Scott added nine points and was tied for the team lead with seven rebounds. He was tied with freshman
Tyreke Key who earned his first career start with seven rebounds and tallied five points.
Jordan Barnes had eight while
Clayton Hughes and
Emondre Rickman each had seven a piece off the bench.
ISU was 25-of-50 shooting for a 50 percent mark while UMSLÂ hit 20-of-64 and were limited to just 31.3 percent shooting. The Sycamores owned the glass by a 45-36 margin and held a 38-24 edge in the paint. The Sycamores also pushed the ball in transition as they had an 11-2 advantage in fast break points.
Despite an early dunk from Key to take a 2-0 lead, the visitors scored the next four before ISU added a lay-up by Scott and then a 3-pointer by Barnes for the 7-6 lead at the 16:36 mark. The two teams traded buckets before a 3-pointer by UMSL's Terre Haute native Steven Davis staked the Tritons to a 13-9 lead.
The UMSL lead reached 18-12 at the 10:09 mark and led by that many twice more including a 26-20 margin with 4:37 to go on a pair of Johnanthan Matthews free throws. The Sycamores then embarked on a 12-0 run as a
Clayton Hughes jumper at the 3:24 mark tied the game and then a pair of Qiydar Davis free throws with 1:51 remaining gave ISU a 32-26 lead. Davis then added a jumper with 42 seconds left and Scott drained a 3-pointer at the halftime buzzer for the 37-28 lead at the break. In the first 20 minutes, Davis led the way with 12 points.
A 3-pointer by
Bronson Kessinger at the 15:07 mark gave the Sycamores a 50-36 lead and then an
Emondre Rickman dunk with 13:54 to go stretch the Sycamore lead out to 52-36. UMSLÂ didn't go away as they used a methodical 7-0 run to trim the Sycamore lead down to 55-45 before scoring the next seven, topped by a Barnes 3-pointer with 8:02 remaining for a 62-45 cushion.
Trey Knight III hit a pair of free throws with 3:08 to go which gave ISU its largest lead of the game -- 23 points -- at 73-50 before the Sycamores emptied the bench and won 75-58.
UMSLÂ was led by 10 points each from Anthony Hughes and Steven Davis.
The Sycamores return to action on Saturday, November 25 when they host in-state rival Ball State at 1 pm (ET) inside Hulman Center to continue the current three-game homestand.
