Box Score DES MOINES, Iowa – The Indiana State Sycamores fell to the Drake 3-0 Saturday (Oct. 7) in Des Moines, Iowa.
"We got a second opportunity today to turn around our conference season and we couldn't take advantage of it, that's what's most disappointing," said head coach
Julie Hanley.
The Sycamores traveled to Des Moines with the match initially kicking off on Oct. 6. However due to severe weather and unplayable field conditions the game was called in the 27
th minute of play and postponed.
During the few minutes of play yesterday the Sycamore struggled right from the whistle against the Bulldogs.
Prior to the weather delay the Sycamores started the match slow and Drake caught them on their heels. The Bulldogs found themselves on a breakaway up the middle of the field and ripped a shot from eighteen yards out giving them an early lead.
Both teams then headed to the locker room before the game was ultimately set to start over today (Oct. 7) at 2 p.m. at Valley High School in West Des Moines, Iowa.
The Sycamores came out with a new energy from the start in today's matchup.
Multiple Sycamores were firing shots at the Drake goalkeeper, but these chances narrowly missed each time.
Danielle Varner led the way offensively for the Sycamores posting a total of four shots with one being on goal.
Defensively Indiana State remained solid for the majority of the match with senior
Kasey Wallace providing an especially stand out performance. Wallace blocked numerous shots and consistently broke up threatening plays made by Drake.
In the 72
nd minute the momentum shifted drastically into the Bulldogs favor. Drake notched three goals in span of 15 minutes.
The first came when redshirt senior, Rebecca Rodgers, found herself on the end of a Hannah Wilder free kick. Then in the 75
th minute, Rodgers broke out down the field again and was taken down inside the Sycamores 18 yard box earning herself a penalty kick. This put the Bulldogs up 2-0.
In the 87
th minute Drake tallied their final goal of the match off yet another free kick. The ball floated into the box where Kasey Hurt received it and put it in the back of ISU's net for a goal.
"The little details are costing us games. I give Drake credit, they came out and scored three goals on set pieces. We have to be better and it starts with myself and the coaching staff," said Hanley.
Each team recorded a total of 10 shots on the day with goalkeeper
Brianna Riscossa making four saves.
The Sycamores will be back in action as they welcome the Illinois State Redbirds to Memorial Stadium on Oct. 14 kicking off at 7 p.m.
