Indiana State to Face Off with Valley Newcomer Valparaiso

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sycamore women's soccer will face off with the Valparaiso Crusaders on Oct. 22 at 1 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.

Indiana State is currently 1-4 in Missouri Valley Conference play and is coming off a tough 2-1 loss to the Evansville Purple Aces.

On Oct. 18 the Sycamores welcomed Evansville in what proved to be a battle until the final minutes of the match.

Evansville got on the board first in just the sixth minute of play after generating their first corner kick of the match. Jayme-Lee Hunter took advantage of the moment and put a perfect curve on the ball, finding the top-right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

Indiana State put on the offensive pressure following the Evansville goal. Then in the 18th minute the efforts paid off for Indiana State.

Tessa Leong found herself on a breakaway down the right flank. Leong ripped a long shot from 35 yards out which soared right over the keepers outstretched hands for a goal. This tied the match at 1-1.

The score remained tied entering halftime.

During the second half the match proved to be a back and forth battle as both teams fired numerous shots at the net, but failed to finish their opportunities. The Sycamores had a total of 17 shots with nine on goal during play while Evansville came away with five with two on goal.

In the 74th minute Evansville notched the game winner when Mikayla Harvey fired a shot from 12 yards out after gaining possession off a scrum.

The Sycamores will now welcome the Valley newcomer to Memorial Stadium.

Valparaiso holds an 8-8 record overall with a 2-3 record in conference play. The Crusaders most recently fell to Illinois State in a nail-biting 1-0 loss.

Cory Griffith and Sydney Griffin lead the way for Valparaiso each holding a total of 17 points.
