Sycamores fall to Purple Aces 2-1 in MVC showdown

Box Score TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – The Sycamores fell to the Evansville Purple Aces 2-1 on a warm night inside Memorial Stadium.

"I was proud of their effort, they gave it everything they had", head coach Julie Hanley said. "We had a lot of shots and a lot of opportunities, but give credit to Evansville. They had a good game plan and physically dominated this game and we just couldn't find the back of the net."

In the sixth minute, the Aces earned their first corner kick opportunity. Jayme-Lee Hunter took advantage of the moment and put a perfect curve on the ball, finding the top-right corner of the net for the 1-0 lead.

The Sycamores went on the offensive attack after the Evansville goal, and in the 18th minute, Tessa Leong found herself with the ball at the opposite 35 yard line to the Aces goal. She burst all the way across midfield to the 40, where she let a ball fly and sailed it right over top of the Evansville goalkeeper to tie the game 1-1.

"Tessa's been playing well and she's been someone we can count on. I was actually telling her to pass it and then when that goal went in, I was like 'okay don't listen to me.' That's just what she does. She shows up in big games," Hanley said.

During the second half, both teams had problems establishing a consistent attack. In the 74th minute of play, Evansville's Mikayla Harvey managed to get a shot off in a scrum and slot the ball into the net, giving the Aces the 2-1 lead and the game.

Indiana State had no problem getting shots throughout the game, putting up 17 total shots, nine of which were on goal, to Evansville's five. Katie Wells got five shots off, and Caitlyn Eddy managed four.

"It hurts and it will hurt tonight, but tomorrow we have to come with the mentality that we're still playing for the season. We have to get better tomorrow and play a really good Valpo team on Sunday," Hanley said.

The Sycamores will be back in action on Sunday, Oct. 22 for their final home game against the Valparaiso Crusaders at 1:00 p.m inside Memorial Stadium.
