TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Indiana State will face off with the Evansville Purple Aces on Oct.18 at 7 p.m. inside Memorial Stadium.
Indiana State currently holds a 1-3 record in Missouri Valley Conference play after most recently defeating the Illinois State redbirds on Oct. 14.
The 2-1 victory over Illinois State was a very historic win for the Sycamore soccer program. This was only the fourth time in program history that the Sycamores have defeated the Redbirds and was the first time since 2008.
This victory was also well deserved as the match proved to be a battle until the final minutes.
Illinois State struck first in only the 12
th minute of play when Kelli Zickert slotted a ball to the middle and hit Mikayla Unger who finished it off for a goal.
Following this goal Indiana State began to show up and turned up the pressure on the Illinois State defense.
The Sycamores earned their first goal of the match in the 31
st minute when
Katie Wells sent a corner kick into the box.
Kasey Wallace was able to redirect the cross with her head finding the body of
Sydney Hamker who ran the ball into the back of the Redbird's net.
Not even a minute later the Sycamores struck again.
Tessa Leong found herself with the ball and tore off down the left flank. Leong sent a beautiful through ball to
Alina Steffen who had been making a diagonal run on the other side. Steffen beat the Illinois State keeper one vs. one and placed the ball in the back of the net.
This goal would prove to be the game winner.
Evansville currently holds a 0-4 record in MVC play after their most recent loss to the Drake Bulldogs.
In 2016 the Sycamores fell to the Purple Aces 2-1 in a road match toward the end of conference season.
Historically the Sycamores have a 7-12-1 record against the MVC in-state rival.
